Effort To Name Public School After Barack Obama Runs Into Cold, Hard Reality

That reality being that not everybody worships Barack Obama.

A proposal to change the name of a Long Island public school to Barack Obama Elementary was scrapped this week after running into fierce public opposition.
Cristobal Stewart, a trustee of the school district in Valley Stream, first broached the idea of renaming the Clear Stream Avenue Elementary School in November to commemorate Obama’s electoral triumph.
But the plan was met with loud resistance at a Nov. 24 hearing. Town residents and parents argued that the existing name, in place since 1924, represented a long and proud tradition that shouldn’t be tinkered with.
Stewart argued with several people during the heated gathering and insisted that many parents in the ethnically diverse school supported the plan.
But he abandoned the campaign Monday during another public hearing that drew 70 people.

Most reasonable people would rather wait until Obama has actually done something as President before we go naming buildings after him.

    Hanny,

Pretty sure it’s legit, I know they have been selling political figures made into caganers forever. There were Clinton ones, Reagan ones, Bush, etc. I got sent some weird dude that I never did figure out who it was supposed to be.LOL. I’m not even sure I still have it. I think I read that a couple from the US vacationing in Barcelona saw them in the markets and brought them home. Oh well, One man’s tacky is another man’s treasure. If they were doing it to be disrespectful, I would be offended, but they mean them as a sign of respect. Just what I want in my nativity, someone taking a dump! Haha.

  • http://SayAnythingBlog.com The_Whistler_ofnd

Nice pics proof. Does that come with a kneeling, puckered up Chris Mathews bobblehead?

  • Hannitized

    Nice dodge.

You said he’s made history. I mocked that by saying “by being elected? That sets the bar pretty low.” You simply reasserted he made history.

Actually, I didn’t “dodge” anything Kenny. I took your obtuse argument head on. “YOU” claimed he merely got elected, while I argued that he was the first black president to get elected.

Not only IS that historic, but it is not only his victory. It is America’s. And right now, when people think of his name, they feel that sense of pride, that we have proved that we do live in a country where you can become president if the American people believe you are qualified for the job.

I realize YOU don’t think so, but the majority of Americans do. So weather you admit it to yourself or not, it is a fact and it IS historic.

You like to argue your opinion all the time and present it as factual refutation. It isn’t always Kenny. These types of debates are not always subjective. I wish you would get back to talking facts. You can be quite formidable when you stick to them, but as of late you have merely been offering your obtuse arguments and pretending you have made an argument.

That’s not remarkable just because he’s black, you imbecile.

Well gee, I didn’t argue that it was “remarkable”. I argued that it was historic…and no matter how much you spin….Obama still made history. You keep WISHING that that isn’t a historic fact….but it is and it will always be.

Robinson faced intense bigotry. But he was such an amazing ball player that he broke the color barrier that prevented African Americans from playing. He overcame adversity that few alive today can imagine, and was considered an all time great even then, when the baseball league was insanely racist.

Yet the first line in his Wiki bio was that he was the first black Major-League Baseball player. FACT.

    Now…on to opinions.

You seem to deny, ignore (whatever) that many blacks in America see the “shattering of the glass ceiling” (remember Sarah Palin using those words to describe her selection?) as a momentous occasion where they now truly believe that they can achieve what ever they want if they just try hard enough, and do the right things, as Barack Obama has done.

You don’t see this as a significant historic occasion because you do not want to, but it is and you must come to terms with this reality and understand how this is part and parcel of situation why people are working to create schools, street names, ect. ect. after Barack Obama.

American needed this type of inspiration for blacks desperately. The fact that you choose to deny Barack Obama this honor is not my issue.

  • Hannitized
    ODS…..he has already made history.

By being elected? That sets the bar pretty low.

I mean, we’ve had 40+ other guys who accomplished that too. I suppose history was made then too. Shrug.

Um…according to your judgement maybe, but it’s not like you have a complete grasp on reality or anything.

Jack Roosevelt “Jackie” Robinson (January 31, 1919 — October 24, 1972) was the first African-American Major League Baseball player of the modern era.

Robinson has had a number of buildings named in his honor. The UCLA Bruins baseball team plays in the Jackie Robinson Stadium.[89] The New York Public School system has named a middle school after Robinson,[90] and Dorsey High School in Los Angeles named their football stadium after him.[9

  • http://insanereindeer.blogspot.com/ Kenny

Yes, because in Kenny’s mind, making history is a pretty low standard?????
    Welcome to cuckooville.

    Nice dodge.

You said he’s made history. I mocked that by saying “by being elected? That sets the bar pretty low.” You simply reasserted he made history.

Jack Roosevelt “Jackie” Robinson (January 31, 1919 — October 24, 1972) was the first African-American Major League Baseball player of the modern era.

That’s not remarkable just because he’s black, you imbecile.

Robinson faced intense bigotry. But he was such an amazing ball player that he broke the color barrier that prevented African Americans from playing. He overcame adversity that few alive today can imagine, and was considered an all time great even then, when the baseball league was insanely racist. Now, he’s remembered as one of the greatest ball players of all time, not because he’s black, but because he was one of the greatest ball players of all time AND he broke the color barrier.

Personal success over difficult obsticles is something to celebrate.

    1st Black Senator Hiram Revels,

And do you actually know anything about Hiram Revels? No. Of course not. But he was the first black SOMETHING, and that’s all that matters.

Revels was an unremarkable man, who seemingly had no interest in politics. He never attended political meetings, and, it was believed, never voted. The Republicans chose him simply to be a the first black senator. Not that it was his fault, but he accomplished almost nothing during his term (it was only a year).

Celebrating Hiram is stupid. He did nothing worth lauding.

In this respect, he is just like Obama. He had great speaking skills, and was very charismatic (he was a preacher after all). There was no reason to nominate him for PTA, let alone Senator, yet, sue to the color of his skin, he was elevated to the top just to look good for the party. (“We had the first black senator”) He was uttely unqualified, had done nothing of significance…then went on to DO nothing of significance. He faded into the dustbin of history, because there was really nothing to remember. But racists trot his name out time to time to signify progress.

Being black and doing something is not “historic”.

Martin Luther King was not the first opponent of segregation. But he was the best, the most effective, and the man we remember as making a difference.

We don’t remember someone for being first, we remember them for being worthwhile.

Obama doesn’t pass the smell test here.

Thanks for the white flag of surrender, Hannitwit. It shows your true colors!

  • Hannitized

He just keeps digging deeper and deeper into the pit of kindness and understanding. Beardsley, the ostentatious merkin, is a class act all the way.

  • ellinas

Rodney, I’ve wiped the floor with your arguments so many times I need to get a new mop.

DINO on December 27, 2008 at 02:18 pm

I’ll pay for the cost of the mop Dino.

  • ellinas

Rodney Graves. My answer: Hah! hah! hah! Bwahhahaah!
    Very funny.
It still speaks of your character!
Those you consider inferior, you shower with contempt.Typical con/neocon, right winger behaviour.
Mighty big of you. Tsk, tsk.

It’s Christmas, so I am going to leave the larger stones lye. (sic)

Are you making up words or just your usual abysmal job of spelling?

If you are talking about when you lied

You’re lying again, evil troll! Can’t you even stop for Christmas? Heh. (As if it’s okay for you to be a snake 364 days a year and clean up your act for one day!)

Hannitwit: The first time you drove off a cliff, were you
    A) drunk
    B) asleep
    C) driving too fast for conditions
    D) driving too fast for your abilities
    E) A & C
    F) A & D
    G) A, C & D
    H) All of the above

H! That’s your nickname here, right?

Intellectually, you’ve been driving off a cliff ever since!
It sure explains your brain damage and personality disorders, though!

May you get everything your richly deserve in 2009!

I personally name something after Obama every day. It is important to stay regular. Bran helps.

Thank goodness some people here on Long Island have some sort of sense! Let’s see what he does first before we up the hero-worshipping!

Proof is not big enough, nor man enoug, (sic) nor smart enough to admit that I never said blacks were desperate.

Said the small, stupid lying troll, and he was wrong about everything in the sentence!
How typically Hannitwit to claim victory while his opponent gathers the ammunition to bury him.

  • http://www.dartemis.net/blog/ sayanything-42

    overcompensating elinas,

You just saved yourself the embarrassment of rejection, not to mention the cost of a mop.

  • ellinas

go away stupid squirrel or I shall mock you a second time.

Rodney Graves on December 28, 2008 at 02:22 pm

Beloved Rodney. I love you too.

2Hotel9. Getting elected to public office in our good old USA requires lots of $$$$$$$$$$.
The point you are trying to make applies to all politicians.
I would like to see anyone elected without spending a damn penny.

Here in Stockton California we have had an elementary school named after GW Bush

Where the weather is currently 49 degrees and sunny with a little breeze.

Christmas in California…it’s not Minot, but I like it!

  • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ proof_positive

That was my point and you know it Poofy.

No one is ever quite sure what your point is Hannitwit, since the words you use quite often do not mean what you think they do. They rest of the time, you are lying. I think that is the point. That you are unreliable in just about every way, except, perhaps, as a bad example!

  • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ proof_positive

Can you please show me the quote where i claimed blacks were desperate, for anything, let alone the election of Barack Obama?

I don’t blame you for not paying attention to anything you say! Most of us here don’t either! Here my ADD afflicted troll:

American needed this type of inspiration for blacks desperately. -Hannitwit

Here is where I quoted it back to you or you could scroll back about fifteen or sixteen comments.

  • http://www.dartemis.net/blog/ sayanything-42

And you are a poltroon and a coward.

  • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ proof_positive

True, Rodney! But, it’s Christmas! In the spirit of the season, let’s give this fellow a holiday from reminding him just how smart he really is, shall we?

  • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ proof_positive

Juan Williams of Fox News talks about the incredible historic accomplishment of the Obama victory.

The fact that it may be an historic accomplishment does not prove that blacks were in despair over not having a black president. This particular instance is not about you lying so much as your general ignorance about everything!
Can you give me a list of blacks that you know personally who were in despair over not have a black president?
Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?? (Desperation now shows itself as Hannitwit Googles in vain to find some fleeting reference he can hang his argument on!)

The fact is, that once again, the troll known as Hannitwit has used a word that he is unfamiliar with, did not know the definition of, but perhaps thought it would make him sound smarter than he actually is. At this point, the only thing that would make him sound smarter than he really is, would be to say nothing at all! (Odds are long against that! ?

  • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ proof_positive

I guess I just have a different perception of black people! None of the African-Americans I know seem to be in desperation about anything! My neighbors, my Realtor, my co-workers all seem to be able to go on about their lives, without despair, regardless of who the president was! It certainly wasn’t all American blacks, so was his remark about desperation racist or just over-reaching?

IMHO All that was missing from Hannitwit’s condescending remarks was the words: “You people”.

  • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ proof_positive

American needed this type of inspiration for blacks desperately.

Desperately? Desperation is a terrible thing! Or is “desperately” just another word you are clueless as to the meaning?

I don’t doubt that having Obama for a role model could be a good thing for African-Americans, but could any African-American readers of SA please write to tell us just how desperate you were for a role model before Obama became president? Or did you somehow manage to eke out an existence and live your lives without despair before then?

You see, there’s this condescending, paternalistic (and somewhat slow-witted) dude in Hawaii that somehow thinks he speaks for you.

  • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ proof_positive

Proof. I know a lier when I see one. Hannitized is not a lier. (sic)
If you don’t agree with the way he sees and interprets events that occur around us, the proper thing to do is say so.

E: This instance is not about him lying, but he has lied about me and is currently lying about me on other threads. He is a despicable scum sucking liar. The fact that he is merely mistaken here does not alter that.

  • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ proof_positive

The deep, painful, ugly recession we’re mired in will go down in history as “The Bush Depression”

Gee! You’d think someone who had a brainstem would know the difference between a “recession” and a “depression”?

Your comments on Christmas reveal your true nature and character.

Hannitized: Even a blind pig finds an acorn every now and then. You haven’t demonstrated through your comments that you’ve “gotten” anything since you’ve arrived here.
Your attempt to assassinate my character falsely on another thread speaks amply of your character.
Try not to drive off any more cliffs…

  • http://www.dartemis.net/blog/ sayanything-42

This thread has been increasingly brown ever since eunuchized the beardless catamite of the “freudian projections” and severe reluctance bordering on inability to admit error joined in along with its pals and apologists.

  • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ proof_positive

Note to Hannitized: The picture is tasteless, not “racist”!

  • http://www.dartemis.net/blog/ sayanything-42

    2H9,

Heh. Another commonality between dino the winy bitch and “…pathetic old homosexual” and eunuchized the beardless catamite of the “freudian projections” and severe reluctance bordering on inability to admit error.

  • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ proof_positive

….did Juan Williams explaining to America how incomprehensible, historic, incredible and grand (America’s grandest moment) it is for an African American to win the Presidency cause your head to explode…..

That wasn’t an explosion you heard, that was the wind rushing through your empty head!
Again, for the uncomprehending, most stupid troll among us: The fact that it may be “incomprehensible, historic, incredible and grand” does not mean that blacks were “in despair” over not having a black president. How else would you define “desperate”?

(And I know your only frame of reference may be to follow the word with “Housewives”, but try to stick to dictionary definitions!)

  • http://www.dartemis.net/blog/ sayanything-42

    Let’s try that again.

    overcompensating elinas says:

Dino IMO, has more sense than R108 and 2H9 combined.

I believe elinas believes that, which is why I hold elinas in about the same comptempt I hold eunuchized and almost as much as I hold for dino.

So overcompensating elinas still has room in the tightly contested race for the bottom of the pool of contempt.

  • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ proof_positive

BTW: The Bush “recession” can only become a “depression” if the next President “What’s-his-name” makes it worse!

    You’re welcome!

  • http://www.dartemis.net/blog/ sayanything-42

    2H9,

Did you notice that I named no names in my fools and poltroons post (0934) and that both overcompensating elinas and eunuchized both replied post haste?

  • http://www.dartemis.net/blog/ sayanything-42

    How’s the kiddy pool, eunuchized?

  • Hannitized

And no. Buying an election is not an “accomplishment”. Doing it twice? Even less so. And spare us your faux outrage. He bought both of you.

Why are you harping on Bush now? Too funny.

  • ellinas

Beloved Rodney. You harbor bad feelings for no reason.
Says a lot about you. And I was ready to invite you for a greek style dinner…….

  • Hannitized

    Poofy, you are troubled.

  • Hannitized

Thanks E!! Proof is not big enough, nor man enoug, nor smart enough to admit that I never said blacks were desperate.

I said America needed desperately for our blacks to believe that they truly could achieve anything they want in America if they work hard enough and do the right thing.

I can not predict if his victory will change the mindset of African Americans in our country or not. But if you listen to what blacks are saying, they are telling us that now they have hope and believe in the fact that America truly is the land of opportunity, EQUAL opportunity. Something many of them wrongly believed was not the case.

  • http://boyddrivefollies.blogspot.com/ Good Ol Boy

We have buildings here on campus at UND that are plastered with donor’s names all over the outside. Tacky as hell, I think. With the exception of the Engelstad Arena, which is awesome.

  • pparets

    Hannitized presumes again…

I can understand that you are ho-hum about Barack Obama’s victory.

Actually, I am more pleased about Mr. Obama’s election than you know.

You are one of the worst stereotypers on this blog.

  • 2Hotel9

And still not a single accomplishment to list. Wow, your crying is become endemic of all your comments. Rapidly surpassing unmanly on its way to sadly pathetic.

  • Hannitized

I don’t think the reason for naming a school after him at this stage has to do with what he has accomplished as president.

I don’t think schools having been named after GWB have to do with what he has accomplished as president either.

  • di butler

I have to say I’m in the group that thinks it’s better to wait until someone passes before naming things for them. I think it’s just a ego thing when people pay money to schools, hospitals, etc., and they name things for themselves. As for the squatting Obama above, also known as a caganer, I had a lady from Spain send me one for my nativity scene once. I didn’t know at the time whether to laugh, or be offended, but they truly are serious that by displaying these it will cause their lands to be more fertile in the following year.

  • ellinas

I don’t think schools having been named after GWB have to do with what he has accomplished as president either.

Hannitized on December 25, 2008 at 06:45 pm

You are absolutely right. A bunch of repubs pushed hard to name the school. Plus it was a new, unnamed school, so there was no name change.
A little story about the people in that district.
When an attempt was made to rename, a street called Charter Way, to Martin Luther King Blvd, the whole area was up in arms opposing the name change of this street.

  • Hannitized
    ODS…..he has already made history.

By being elected? That sets the bar pretty low.

I mean, we’ve had 40+ other guys who accomplished that too. I suppose history was made then too. Shrug.

Yes, because in Kenny’s mind, making history is a pretty low standard?????

    Welcome to cuckooville.

    1st Black Senator Hiram Revels,

Revels noted that the state legislature tried to name the school after him, but he insisted it remain named for the governor. See “Autobiography of Hiram Revels,” Carter G. Woodson Collection, LC.

    Nothing to see here…

  • 2Hotel9

List all those “accomplishments” welfare whore.

  • Hannitized

…. but “not” the heaps of vilifying that you sought after. That is the difference between you, others and myself.

  • Hannitized

As I had said earlier in this argument Poofy.

When you stumble upon my remark that talks about what America needed desperately, maybe then you will revise your interpretation. If not, and I suspect not, because you can never admit to your inability to comprehend what you read, then please continue on with your charade.

And here you go….pretending and imagining that you are onto something. Continue with your charade Poofy. It is all to clear that you are a loony bird to anyone paying attention.

  • http://www.dartemis.net/blog/ sayanything-42

    overcompensating elinas,

Going to start making excuses for dino next?

  • Hannitized

Ok, let me rephrase my surprise that you would make such a silly comparison.

Do you really think that there should be such a honor bestowed upon someone who assassinated Abraham Lincoln (and made history)? Do you truly think that is an apt comparison to naming a school to Barack Obama, who made history and inspired African Americans to believe that America is truly the land of opportunity? Equal opportunity that is?

    Really?
