Ed Schultz: Let’s Make Dick Cheney Pay For Our Health Care!

Yes, it’s a moment of unabashed stupidity from the least-watched man on cable news, but what’s really sad is that Schultz’s blathering is actually the Democrat strategy for selling government health care in a nutshell. They’re out to convince Americans that they’ll get “free” health care while somebody else (preferably someone they don’t like such as Cheney or “the rich”) pays for it.
Here’s a transcript, video here:

ED SCHULTZ: Once again, Republicans are lyin’. Doggone it, we catch ‘em every time, don’t we? This time again it’s on health care. They’re trying to scare the American people on health care reform. They’re saying your taxes are going to be going up. Well that’s only half true. You see, the Democrats want a surtax to pay for health care. That would affect 1.2% of the population who earn money in this country.
That’s right: 1.2%, the richest Americans, would pay more. Now, by my math, 98.8% of Americans would not have to pay an additional dime. Now, the highest surtax would be 5.4%. That would be paid by people making over $1 million a year. You know, people like Dick Cheney, George Bush, Paris Hilton. Maybe the guys who were playing in the All-Star game last night, they’re going to have to pay more, the Hollywood crowd, they’ve been willing to pay more all along to get health care.
So the question you need to ask at home tonight folks is: do you really care if Dick Cheney and the rest of that crowd has to pay a little bit more so we can have health care in this country? The sum total of this is, personally, I don’t believe that the American people care if 1.2% of the American people have to pay more so we can get health care in this country.

That sounds nice, and if people watched Schultz’s show I’m sure at least some of them (the sort who believe everything they see on TV, e.g. Obama voters) are totally convinced that this is a good deal. But the idea that we can pay for a massive new health care entitlement in this country by taxing just 1.2% of the population, even if it is the richest 1.2%, is ludicrous. The math simply doesn’t work.
What’s more, we’ll all still pay for government health care. Money taken out of the economy by the government is money out of all our pockets. Perhaps not directly, but once that richest 1.2% is hit with the bigger taxes and begins to cut back on their economic activity a lot of people who aren’t in the 1.2% are going to lose money and jobs.
What I don’t understand is, why shouldn’t all Americans pay for government health care? It’s something we’re all going to get, shouldn’t we all pay for at least some of it if we’re going to have it? There was a time in this country when getting something from the government that other people paid for was called welfare, and it wasn’t something to be proud of.
Of course, the problem Democrats have with that is if government health care comes before the taxpayers with a big, fat tax bill attached to it they simply won’t support it. Democrats must trick Americans into thinking that this is going to be “free.”

Rob it is about class warfare, it’s about trying to play on peoples fears and emotions. The dems have picked the rich. They are trying to convince the zero sum gain folks. Just think people that contribute nothing to society are the ones that are going to gain while the people that give us jobs and contribute are the ones that have to pay for the sick, lame and the lazy. It’s a load of crap.

Someday Ed is going to find out he is included in the “rich” group even while he wallows in his dead end job at MSNBC. As costs rise government tax assessments will rise and benefits will be cut.

Ed needs to a)ditch the folksy “doggone it” reminds me of Stuart Smalley(the character, not the Senator)…Ed…nobody likes you any more than they liked Stuart Smalley. b) Ed needs a serious dose of Prozac.

I loved Ed when he did UND football, I really did. The screaming rants seemed appropriate then, but now it is just sad and like watching a car accident happen; you know it isn’t going to end well, but you keep watching.

  • ellinas

Man this all makes me sick! It is absolutely ridiculous to penalize the rich, just for being rich. I completely agree that everyone should have to pay for it, because everyone is gonna on it…doesn’t that make sense. I’m poor, I’m not even close to being in the top 1.2% of the countries wealthiest, but I plan on being. And I know plenty of self built, hard working Americans who are going to get completely screwed on this…I make 20 million dollars next year and save 19 million of it, I still get f’d. Does that make sense?CrimeCleaner on July 15, 2009 at 06:48 pm

Yes it does. Because you will not make 20 million next year. Or the year after.

Doesn’t Alchy Ed always claim to be rich?

  • Brent

I love how 95% of the country doesn’t understand that taxing the rich ultimately hurts those not directly taxed, too. As a percentage of income, those not directly taxed actually are more exposed than the targeted rich. Even if you are a utilitarian and believe that it’s okay to ‘soak the rich’, it still doesn’t actually work that way.

  • http://www.valleydeals.com/cgi-bin/board2/YaBB.pl Kevin

“The rich” own the means of production, which produces all the products we need and services we enjoy. Why won’t they just raise the prices they charge to pay the increased taxes?

  • jimmypop

Yeah nice try Ed, there is a reason no one watches your stupid show, because you flat out wrong. What is wrong with you people? At what point does it bother you? When the top 1% have 75% of the wealth? 80%?

There's something very wrong about that. But I'll bet you think you're going to be one of the chosen, right? And when you "arrive" you don't want to have to pay taxes.

Just for the record, I have "arrived" I started with nothing, worked long hours, 7 days a week, went without, took risks, invested in myself, and paid one hell of a lot of taxes along the way. Today with the real estate tax, gas tax, income tax, sales tax, use tax, and all the hidden taxes and fees, I pay more in tax per year than My net income. I know you don't understand that but it is the way it is.

Instead of being a bitter hater, you could just go out and create more wealth! Radical, I know. Or, you can just sit there and bitch about boogeymen that you've made up in your mind while crying that other people have what you believe is too much. Your choice.

  • http://insanereindeer.blogspot.com/ Kenny

What is wrong with you people? At what point does it bother you? When the top 1% have 75% of the wealth? 80%?

For once the question makes sense.

My current job is a great example. We are the most expensive DJ company in the area. My boss charges 595 for 4 hours. And out of that, I get 125. (31.25 an hour). If I went to another company, they would make less money off of the sweat of my brow…but I would make less money too. Our next cheapest competitor charges 490 for 4 hours, but only pays the DJ 90 on average. So they make 70 less per show, but the DJ makes 35 less than me.

Despite my boss getting richer than I am, I benefit more than other DJs.

My quality of life is not diminished by someone else making more. I benefit when my boss benefits. So if my boss makes 20% more per show and I make 5% more…should I be angry that he is benefitting more than me? Even though both of us make more money?

Of course not. Life is not about how you stack up next to others monetarily, but meeting your needs, and improving your situation every year.

  • http://insanereindeer.blogspot.com/ Kenny

Hold on. It's about to get divvied up more equally than it has in a long time. Keep pushing and the top 1% won't get any.

Yet, this never happens. I don't benefit by my boss making less money. We've seen this for the past year. Stealing from the haves and giving to the have nots has increased unemployment and cut our economy.

  • Hannitized

    Interesting.

At my company, we cut the salaries of those on the east coast because people would not work for anything under 6 figures, base.

So the company made flat rate base salaries for people with same positions and increased our comp package. Now, the people in Hawaii make more while my bosses make less.

So the inverse is true at my company compared to Kenny's.

Oh, and I volunteered 3-6% of my commissions to the other engineers I work with who don't have salary + commission, comp plan. I made more but I decided to share the wealth.

Never say a liberal doesn't have a rational thinking brain, because they won't understand.

The meaning of Marxist is probably too deep a concept for them as well.

You know, the joke back in the days of Stalin was the intelligentsia, the pundits, news people, business owners – those types was, they need us. Woof: You lie again; even the Dem MSM had articles describing the destruction of jobs Carter caused with that bit of class warfare.
For the economically ignorant, Carter's tax was an "excise" tax, not primarily for revenue purposes; in Latin, "excise" means "cut out". It is a tax designed for the specific purpose of stopping a product or activity deemed by the govt to be undesirable.
You couldn't be more wrong. Domestic luxury boat builders and sellers of accessories for same were practically wiped out by Carter's excise tax.

I wonder what's going to happen when the seniors start getting denied health care. I'll be they flex their political muscle and turn that around to denying treatment for behavioral related diseases like AIDS.

I'm not for that but it makes more sense to support someone who was productive for 40 some years than to spend it on someone who knowingly engaged in ultra-risky behavior.

Of course in my system people are responsible to themselves and their families not some number for a government bureaucrat.

I am not scared of Eddie. I have watched his spiral downward, punching a woman in a bar, screaming rants ,etc, etc, etc. It is frankly, quite painful to watch. From the way he was, to how he is now, it is like watching a train crash in slow motion, and it is sad. It isn't his change of politics, it is all the other meltdown things he has done. I really loved him doing UND football, but for whatever reason, he just started to slowly meltdown and it has been a sad thing to watch

    Badlands,

My remark was meant to be a reflection of the words that are used against us when we make valid criticisms against Palin. They say that to us every time we talk about her inability to speak her ideas of foreign policy or issues in a meaningful way.

In regards to Ed, I read his bio once, maybe a few years ago and I liked what I had heard about how his wife had softened his views on politics, having once been a republican, but then finally understanding the positions of a Democrat, having been near his wife whose opinion he could listen to with the partisan plugs removed from his ears.

I haven't seen his bad behavior, I only see his show on MSNBC and it seems to be very informative to me. Of course, I maybe catch 1/2 of his show twice a week at best.

I will keep an open mind. I mean, I watch O'Reilly and he paid off a woman who worked for him on a sexual harassment charge. Sometimes O'Reilly is a likable guy, even though I disagree with a lot of what he says.

Why should the rich pay more than their fair share of the Healthcare? They could opt out and pay as they go to see the Dr. and good for them if they can afford it, but for people like me, I need to pay into a socialistic mafia style organization to help me through my rough times. BHO is taking away the freedoms of the people and I don't like it. The libs are saying the conservation talk show host are using scare tactics to scare Americans into not supporting universal healthcare. They are not using scare tactics. They are telling the truth and the libs are so star struck over getting something to good to be true, that they won't listen to reason. I hope I don't have to say "I told you so."

  • gustave776

Eddie Schultz is scared of me and other conservatives, he will not let me call into his talk show anymore for fear here will get embarrassed once again. I would go up against him any time any where and he knows I can kick his ass in a debate. All he does is loose his temper and cut me off when the truth starts to hurt and he can't back peddle fast enough to keep his train of thought. Big Sweaty Eddie has all but used up his welcome in ND and MN Radio and that is why he is always searching for new places to call home. Remember Mott, ND, Eddy? Fargo, UND, NDSU, even the Vikings didn't want Eddy the Great. He failed @Air America And he was telling everyone he was going to be the Rush Limbaugh of the left. Eddies was good as being a sports announcer and maybe playing FB, but now he is in search of the lime lite and tends to burn bridges as he flounders along.
