Earl Pomeroy Retirement Watch: Why Isn’t He Defending Himself?

Jim Geraghty has a good quote from some GOP official responding to news that Earl Pomeroy may well be looking for a golden parachute from Congress into the life insurance industry.

“Good for him; he should be looking for a job. He’s got one million in the bank, and yet he hasn’t run any ads defending himself on the health-care vote.”

Regardless of who said that, it’s an excellent point.
Pomeroy is in trouble. One poll shows him losing to “other” by 8 points. He’s cast some very unpopular votes of late, one for a health care bill that 2/3′s of his constituents oppose and another for a death tax 80% of his constituents oppose chief among them.
And yet, despite a gigantic (by North Dakota standards) war campaign war chest available to him he’s yet to run a single ad defending himself.
Pomeroy isn’t spending money in advance of what could be the toughest race of his campaign. Best evidence yet that he’s not really running?
On a related note, one well-connected insurance industry insider has emailed me to say that Pomeroy is absolutely going to jump ship and to expect the move within two weeks. Sounds plausible, but anything is possible at this point.

Will Obama be the one to introduce him?

  • sayanything-4928

It won’t matter what he does as far as controlling him. He has never voted in ND’s best interest and he won’t start now. It will be nice to see that plastic faced stooge off the ND political scene. McCain losing may be one of the best things to happen to this nation, if we can just withstand and repair the damage done by the marxists.

Are the Democrats getting Captain America Jasper Schneider’s super hero suit ready? The “genuine champion for consumers” is probably buffing those pearly whites and getting ready to run down the aisle at the Democratic convention to the roar of the liberal faithful.

Oh that would be nice to see another seat change to the right side of he isle.

  • farm4money

talking about a mans socialist voting record means you think i am a “loud mouthed minority’s attack dog” ?

well woof woof to you …….. oops … make that bow wow …. don’t want to upset ‘woofie’

he will NOT bail. the governor would chose his replacement, right?

the one thing that MIGHT chase him…. if the liberals told him directly, hed be getting no money from them when the elections roll around. if i were him and that was the case, i might just bail out undefeated as well. a well funded earl is going to be tough to beat.

On healthcare he can’t defend himself. He voted to keep the discussion going, now he is complaining to his caucus that it’s taking to long. Which one is his position.

  • sayanything-3430

Well you can’t count Pomeroy out, but I believe the GOP nominee will beat him this year. Personally I think Cramer is hungry and Earl is tired. It’ll be nice to see him go, although I have a suspicion that he will run for Governor someday.

Waaa, why isn’t he getting distracted from the Nation’s business by the loud mouthed minority’s attack dogs?

    Poor poor republicans.

A retirement is problematic like Dorgan’s. He can’t be controlled by the people until his January 2011 retirement, because he can’t be held accountable for what Pelosi needs and uses him for.

  • sayanything-6955

Ether way Pomeroid is going away, and ND will be the better for it.

  • sayanything-6955

Into the liquor cabinet a bit early eh lock jaw?

  • sayanything-6955

Its all anecdotal, but I have talked to too many folks who have voted for these three since day one, and are not voting for them again. Dorgan knew this.

  • sayanything-40098

Hes going to take is “war chest” and run like a little girl that sees a spider, Pomeroy is the weakest of the 3 and knows he doesn’t stand a chance. Run little girl run.
