Earl Pomeroy Retirement Watch: Why Isn’t He Defending Himself?
Jim Geraghty has a good quote from some GOP official responding to news that Earl Pomeroy may well be looking for a golden parachute from Congress into the life insurance industry.
“Good for him; he should be looking for a job. He’s got one million in the bank, and yet he hasn’t run any ads defending himself on the health-care vote.”
Regardless of who said that, it’s an excellent point.
Pomeroy is in trouble. One poll shows him losing to “other” by 8 points. He’s cast some very unpopular votes of late, one for a health care bill that 2/3′s of his constituents oppose and another for a death tax 80% of his constituents oppose chief among them.
And yet, despite a gigantic (by North Dakota standards) war campaign war chest available to him he’s yet to run a single ad defending himself.
Pomeroy isn’t spending money in advance of what could be the toughest race of his campaign. Best evidence yet that he’s not really running?
On a related note, one well-connected insurance industry insider has emailed me to say that Pomeroy is absolutely going to jump ship and to expect the move within two weeks. Sounds plausible, but anything is possible at this point.
