Earl Pomeroy Opposes Tax Reform
He says he doesn't, but he does.
See, Rep. Pomeroy says he is concerned about our current system of taxation, yet he shoots down every effort to reform it that comes along while offering no solutions of his own. It is nonsense like this that hinders much needed tax reform.
People like Pomeroy like the current tax system. The confusing maze of deductions, refunds and loopholes every working American must weave his/her way through by April 15h every year is a good way to keep Americans in the dark about how much in taxes they're really paying. There is something like 7,000,000 words in the U.S. tax code. There is only 700,000 or so words in the Bible. It is fair to say that the tax code is a challenge to understand, the the overwhelming number of Americans who file their taxes incorrectly (or must hire professionals to do it and even then get them filed wrong) bears that out.
But when you're a big-government Democrat who feels it is the government's responsibility to confiscate lots of money from citizens to redistribute as the bureaucrats in D.C. see fit, a complicated tax code is a must. Americans don't like paying taxes, so if you can confuse them to the point where they don't know how much money they send to the Treasury you can squeeze more out them than if the tax code were more transparent.
This is the gist of Pomeroy's opposition to the Fair Tax and any other type of tax reform. It is passive-aggressive baloney. He hides his support of our current mess-of-a-tax-code by saying he really doesn't like it but never getting behind any real reform.
I think it is high time we found a replacement for ND's seat in the House. Someone willing to make government more transparent and less costly for Americans.
I think North Dakota has just such a person in Matt Mechtel.
