Earl Pomeroy Attacks Duane Sand, Lies About Record On Drilling

Norht Dakota Rep. Earl Pomeroy, who is facing a challenge from Republican Duane Sand this election season, is running ads attacking Sand for running for office too often and distorting his record on domestic oil drilling (you can hear Sand’s previous ad about Pomeroy’s drilling record here).

Here’s a rough transcript of the ad Pomeroy is running (it’s not currently available on his campaign website):

Every four years we see it:  the competition, the back & forth drama. No, not the Olympics.  It’s Duane Sand in North Dakota, running for political office and twisting the truth.

The ad goes on to suggest that Pomeroy has voted for domestic drilling 15 times.  That’s surprising, because after a rather extensive search of Pomeroy’s voting record by myself I can’t seem to find evidence of those votes.  What I do find are several votes to restrict the oil industry’s ability to produce more oil domestically, up to and including Pomeroy’s very latest vote to recess the House of Representatives for several weeks rather than stay in session to debate a domestic drilling bill.

If Earl really wants us to believe that he’s in favor of domestic drilling, and that he thinks it’s a serious issue, why did he vote to convene the House instead of debating a bill to allow domestic drilling?

It seems as though Earl Pomeroy, and not Duane Sand, is the one distorting things here.

Comments

I don’t think Earl can keep track of what he votes for.  He’s a nice enough guy but not the sharpest cookie in the toolshed.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

Earl has run for office most of his life.
His worst nightmare is having to earn an honest living in the private sector.

I think it’s pretty significant that he mentions Sands name in his ad.  Isn’t it in Campaigning 101 that you don’t mention your opponents name unless it’s close?

I would to hear what Earl has to say about that. Rob, Earl isn’t good about answering email, I have sent him two this year and have yet to get a response, the only one I got was from the Mortage senator and his letter basically told me that he was going to support the fairness doctrine.

Too bad none of this matters.  Watch and see: Ol’ Earl will end up with 65%+ of the vote in November - many from Republicans who’ll vote for McCain, Hoeven, etc. & then switch columns to vote for him.  It happens every election and the GOP in this state is too timid to hit their voters head-on with this issue.

That’s what his baby brother, Glenn, thought in 2000.

Yup.  The DC 3 are essentially unbeatable.  And they know it.

EC, while I agree with you that the “big three” have a stranglehold on ND politics, I think that if fewer people on the right had your attitude that stranglehold might be a little loser.

I’m not sure I see the connection between my opinion on the viability of Republican opponents against the DC 3 and the latters’ success.  Are you saying that a more optimistic perspective would would them in jeopardy of losing?  If so, how?
