Earl Pomeroy’s First Excuse For Avoiding A Debate Was A Scheduling Conflict

Written By:

An emailer made an interesting point this morning in responding to my post about Rep. Earl Pomeroy using Berg’s primary challenger JD Donaghe as an excuse not to debate. The emailer points out that, while this may be the spin Pomeroy and his apologists are using now, originally Pomeroy wanted to skip the debate because his schedule was too busy.

I hadn’t picked up on that, but according to this initial report about Pomeroy’s decision to avoid a debate that was exactly Pomeroy’s justification.

Rep. Earl Pomeroy, D-N.D., has declined an invitation to debate GOP challenger Rick Berg next week in Fargo at the North Dakota Newspaper Association convention.

“He’s not going to be attending,” Pomeroy spokesman Brenden Timpe said Wednesday. “The reason is both scheduling difficulties and we’re more than six months from an election.”

He apparently didn’t come up with the alternate explanation until later.
