Donald Trump On Reagan: He Couldn’t Deliver

Written By:

Appearing on Sean Hannity’s show recently, Donald Trump described the iconic former President as a “smart guy” and cited him as one President he admired the most.

“I loved his style. I loved what he represented,” said Trump. “I thought he represented something very special for this county.”

But in his 2004 book, Trump: The Art of the Deal, the reality show star expressed a much different opinion about Reagan (via ThinkProgress).

Searching for Reagan in Trump’s book via Amazon at the link above you find this passage:

Personally, I don’t begrudge Trump his opinion of Reagan. I don’t agree with it, but he can have whatever opinion he wants.

What bothers me is that Trump is so clearly all over the map. The thing he’s saying now, as a presumably serious candidate for 2012 (he continues to rank relatively high in the polls) doesn’t match up with a lot of the things he’s said in the past.

To me, consistency is important in a candidate. How often do we see politicians get elected, having campaigned on platitudes that pleased the masses, only to turn around and do the exact opposite of what they campaigned on?

I’ve never considered Trump to be a serious contender, but a lot of people do for some reason. They’d do well to remember that Trump a) is a liberal and b) is apparently willing to say whatever it takes to please the audience that is currently in front of him.

Neither are things we should want in a presidential candidate.
