Does Fred Thompson Have A Trophy Wife?

As far as I’m concerned, Fred Thompson is the GOP candidate for President in 2008. He’s the only candidate anyone seems really excited about, and as soon as he’s in the race he’ll drown out the rest of the field.
So since he’s a sure thing (in my book anyway), I guess it’s time to address something the left is already bringing up: Fred Thompson’s wife.

image

At first glance all I can say is, I’m a fan. She’s gorgeous.
But some people are upset that Thompson is married to this beauty. Because she’s younger than him, and he married her after he divorced his first wife of 26 years. And dating her makes Thompson almost a sex predator (until the guy at the link learned how to read a date).
This will undoubtedly be the left’s line on Thompson. Because they’ll have nothing else. Thompson is charming, articulate, principled and exudes a sense of confidence and optimism Americans have been longing for in a President since, well, Ronald Reagan. Which isn’t to suggest that Thompson is Reagan (I’ll wait until he’s had his shot in the White House before making that call), but he certainly seems that way, and it’s going to be tough for any of the left’s class warriors and anti-war demagogue candidates to match that.
But one issue that is a potential stumbling block is Thompson’s personal life, so let’s address that. He got married when he was 17 in 1959 to Sarah Elizabeth Lindsey. They both worked to put Fred through college and support their three kids. In 1985, around the time Thompson started his acting career, he divorced his wife. At the time he’d been working as a lobbyist in D.C., and he was not to become a Senator until years later in 1994 when he was elected in a special election to fulfill Al Gore’s vacated seat (Gore had been elected Vice President).
Thompson married his current wife, Jeri Kehn, in 2002. Seventeen years after leaving his first wife, and the same year he retired from the Senate.
Now personally, I don’t see anything in that time line which indicates that Thompson has done anything immoral. He obviously didn’t leave his first wife for Kehn, as Kehn came 17 years later and Thompson reportedly didn’t even meet her for the first time until 1994. He also didn’t marry Kehn for publicity’s sake as he did so after he resigned from the Senate and well before any talk of a Presidential campaign. There’s rumors circulating on the left that Thompson divorced his first wife because he knocked up a married woman, but then there’s also rumors on the left about 9/11 being a plot by Karl Rove to get Bush re-elected in 2004…so let’s take that with a grain of salt.
Ultimately, I don’t think this is going to matter. But then, I’m not James Dobson either.

Why are the socialist left, Joe Scarborough and the blogging world drooling over the fact Fred has a younger wife???

I don’t remember any such outrage when the cadaverous Alan Cranston (D) was dating Morgan Fairchild!

Which one is running for President?

I don’t like the Dobson crack one bit Rob!

Dobson does not speak for any Christians outside his own limited sphere influence, while he does, whether you like him or not, have a positive contribution to make to the national dialogue. I am no fan of Dobson, not the least because I disagree with so-called Christian Psychology, as I think these two are opposing philosophies. I don’t like the fact he is so quick to speak out on so many political issues, but I do believe he not only has a right to speak, he has a positive contribution to make.

Thompson is not the darling of the Christian Right, but they will vote for him in very large numbers, because he can articulate his own views and theirs with such clarity and power. I think you do Thompson a disservice by using the Dobson name in a negative context and in essence making it appear he could give marching orders to the Christian Right to vote against Thompson – he cannot.

Divorce is always wrong it hurts so many people, it would be better to more soberly decide about a life-partner; but even evangelical Christians (IR1) have experienced the pains of divorce and remarriage in their ranks, and will look at the character of Thompson as a whole man and I believe help make him our next President.

Would you like to point us to that money? Name some names, list some account numbers? We would love to hear it.

Well, well! Look what little troll turd just floated back to the surface.

Sounds like you’re just a wee bit jealous, Jim. Your right hand cramping up on you?

  • 2Hotel9

And lets not be leaving anyone out, might hurt their feelings. Teddie and J Rockefeller fit katie’s description also. And how many times have Kucinich and Dean strolled down the primrose path?

I don’t know who Fred Dobson is–I know of James Dobson, and regarding his comments on Fred Thompson, Thompson’s press aide more or less confirmed what Dobson claimed (that Thompson wasn’t an evangelical) by saying that Thompson was a Christian by baptism. Most evangelicals believe that Christians are those who make a profession of faith, not those who simply “get wet.”

Personally, I’m not waiting for the perfect “evangelical” candidate, though, so I’ll consider supporting Thompson. He’s got a lot of good points.

And the fact that he’s divorced and remarried? All too common today, and I’m afraid that even if the worst were true about it, there are not very many men in the race who ought to be talking about it.

So… the people who defended Bill Clinton’s serial philandering, with other men’s wives and a barely voting-age intern, by saying “It’s just about sex,” are now going to snidely disparage Fred Thompson because his wife, and his former girlfriend, both far outclass anything that Clinton could even dream of???

Why, I do believe that’s fear I smell wafting in from the far left side of the aisle. Pure, unvarnished, animal fear. I LOVE IT!

Thompson was not appointed to fill Al Gore’s vacant senate seat. Democrat Jim Cooper was appointed by TN’s Democrat Governor Ned McWherter. Thompson won a special election to finish the term, then was elected to a full term two years later.

I do think his ‘playboy-iousity’ will count against him much more with the uptight right than it would in slander columns that the lefties, who already don’t like Thompson, are reading. That whole Christian thing.

Well, you and all the other leftie haters are hoping for that to be true, at any rate. You are depending on it, as a matter of fact. Pathetic.

An old fool and a golddigger. That’s the GOP’s idea of the next President and First Lady? OMG….well their last idea wasn’t too good either, as it turns out.

“An old fool and a golddigger” would seem to be a pretty good description… for the Democrats’ last idea of what our next president should be. Of course in the case of Mr. Kerry, he was both all by himself… and a liar to boot.

  • Bat One

He’s got a ways to go, if at all.

    Sparkie,

Indeed. Which allows you plenty of time to work on that anti-Christian bigoty of yours.

Even if Fred’s “playboy-osity” (note the spelling) were the issue you seem pleased to imagine, his policy positions as he has so far articulated them are far more acceptable than those of the other credible GOP candidates… and miles ahead of anything being touted on the left side of the aisle.

As I recall, the divorce/second marriage/second family thing was thrown up against Ronald Reagan too… all to no great effect. Social liberals who endorse “Heather Has Two Mommies” and “It Takes a Village” are in no position to be taken seriously when they bray disingenuously to conservatives about the evils of divorce.

    Whoa Mickey…

Besides, if Billy Boy had a hot wife maybe he wouldn’t be a skirt chaser yet today.

Seriously, that statement was pretty lame. If people based their marriage fidelity on looks then most of you would have cheating wives.

  • Katie

An old fool and a golddigger. That’s the GOP’s idea of the next President and First Lady? OMG….well their last idea wasn’t too good either, as it turns out.

AS IF this woman would have even been the tiniest bit into sleeping with this man if he didn’t have all that lobbyist $$ stashed! Can we get real please. Blech!

  • 2Hotel9

Wow! And I thought he was a stud because he was bagin’ Lori Morgan.

  • Mickey

Fairy tale lives are for children. There is no crime in a stable marriage. Besides, if Billy Boy had a hot wife maybe he wouldn’t be a skirt chaser yet today.

    The left can be damned.

  • Jim Robinson

Of course it matters. If she was whoring around DC looking for a meal ticket when she met Fred, and will now be campaigning for Fred, as he claims she will, it matters.

    She’s gorgeous.

Get your prescription checked. She’s got a ‘Frankenstein’s bride’ dye job; huge, arching eyebrows that it looks like a Jewish grandma should be sporting; and she’s got a long face (as in horsie and not sadness). She’s ugly. Worse than Laura.
Well. That settles it. He ain’t getting my vote. Ima find the guy with the hot wife. Looks like Kucinich for me this year (JK).

You are acting like Thompson is the GOP candidate. He’s got a ways to go, if at all. Frankly, I do think his ‘playboy-iousity’ will count against him much more with the uptight right than it would in slander columns that the lefties, who already don’t like Thompson, are reading. That whole Christian thing. Oh, wait, all the GOP candidates are either philanderers or polygamists this year. Odd.

I changed “Fred” to “James” in the post.

Not sure where i came up with “Fred.”
