Do Awards Mean A Damn Thing Anymore?

According to Slate.com Chris Matthews is about to receive some prestigious award I've never heard of called the Reeves Award for, get this:

"excellence in writing or speaking about Churchill's life and times, or for applying his precepts and values to contemporary issues among the English-Speaking Peoples," according to the affair's invitation.

Well sure this makes about as much sense as giving the Nobel Peace Prize to Yassir Arafat, the man who perfected the suicide bomb vest (but oddly and sadly never tested the prototype himself). After all, it was Chris Matthews who wrote Jimmy Carter's notorious 'malaise speech' which was of course downright Churchillian in placing the blame for America's failed leadership squarely where it belongs: on the American people themselves.

Jack Shafer gushes a little bit here about Matthews:

Legendary. Supporter of democracy. Learned reporter. Distinguished. Prolific. All of these words may capture Matthews' character, but not as well as do flighty, braying, shameless, and opportunistic. It's a shame that nobody gives a Sammy Glick Award. Matthews would be a cinch.

One wonders why they awarded it to Matthews - after all, Rosie O'Donnell has lots of time on her hands these days and, wow, have you read any of her haiku? Churchillian doesn't begin to describe them.

Churchillian

I think they meant Orwellian! (That double L -I -A -N confuses them!)

Chris Mathews should get the talking spit contest. Sorry, BUT it really makes me sick to watch him talk. Swallow!

The thing I find annoying of late is the overuse and thus dumbing down of the term, “Hero”.

For example, John McCain is often referred to as a “war hero”.

Um, what did John McCain do during the Vietnam War that was heroic?  Well, he was a prisoner of war.  That makes him unfortunate, not heroic.

Heroes risk their lives to save their platoons against all odds.  Heroes throw their bodies on a grenade to save their comrades.  Heroes command the troops at D-Day.  Heroes rush into crimbling high-rises to save lives at their own peril.

McCain is no hero.

Maybe you should look into it a little further. I’m no big John McCain fan, but he was nearly killed

when a Zuni rocket from an F-4 Phantom was accidentally fired across the carrier’s deck. The rocket struck McCain’s A-4E Skyhawk as the jet was preparing for launch.

-wikipedia
He was hit by shrapnel in his legs and chest.
More telling than that is this:

On October 26, 1967, McCain’s A-4 Skyhawk was shot down by an anti-aircraft missile, landing in North Vietnam’s Truc Bach Lake, near Hanoi. McCain broke both arms and a leg after ejecting from his plane. After he regained consciousness, a mob gathered around him, spat on him, kicked him and stripped him of his clothing. He was then tortured by soldiers from North Vietnam, who crushed his shoulder with the butt of a rifle and bayoneted him in his left foot and abdominal area. He was then transported to the infamous Hoa Lo Prison, also known as the Hanoi Hilton.

Once McCain arrived at the prison, he was placed in a cell and interrogated daily. When McCain refused to provide any information to his captors, he was beaten until he lost consciousness.

When it was discovered his father was the Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Command, (CINCPAC), commander of all U.S. forces in Vietnam, he was offered a chance to return home. McCain turned down the offer of repatriation due to his belief in the principle of “first in, first out”: he would only accept the offer if every man taken in before him was released as well.

During his military career, he received a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit, the Purple Heart, and a Distinguished Flying Cross.

Dispute his crappy politics and strange political bedfellows, but don’t diminish his war record.

You can take your foot out of your mouth now Bill.

And wow, imagine that, a lefty changing the subject. I love how the left are like little kids: every time they’re presented with something they don’t like, it’s like “well, what about so-and-so.....”

Weak.

I too am not a big John McCain fan. BUT if he is not a hero? You sure could have fooled me. Maybe the definition of hero and Peace maker need to be reviewed?

I’m also not a big John McCain fan, but I believe anyone who honorably serves our country is a hero.

Also, when you compare him to John “Three rose thorn scratches and I’m out” Kerry, the difference is more apparent.

Plus, after shrapnel, broken bones, beating and torture and five years of hell at the “Hanoi Hilton"-- he returned to active duty, not defaming the troops or stalking ketchup heiresses!
