Divide and Conquer

First they came for the automatics, than all handguns, then shotguns....

Shops should be banned from selling imitation samurai swords, the government has said.

The Home Office said the weapons had been used in about 80 serious attacks in England and Wales since 2003 and it wants to target their distribution.

People who carry the cheaply priced swords in public can already be charged with possessing an offensive weapon.

Genuine samurai swords used in ceremonial martial arts display or sought by collectors would be exempt.

The British government is doing what they did to eventually ban privately owned firearms.  I have a hard time believing that the only swords in England are Samurai style.  But if they were to ban all swords then there would be political resistance.  There must be a million or so European style swords hanging on walls in England, but they aren’t coming for those, yet.

This goes to show that the left is relentless.  First they say that they must institute gun registration for a reason (in England it was because of the Bolsheviks which I find ironic).  Then they make things tougher for law abiding people to obtain the guns.  The more they make it harder for an honest person to defend themselves the more they empower the criminals.  So when their first limited gun restrictions causes more crime they insist that they need more gun restrictions to fight crime.  Of course crime gets worse and worse and the left can’t admit that they are wrong.  Now that they confiscated every gun that they can they are going after swords.

Meanwhile the crime rate in Jolly Old England has become worse than in the US.

Comments

Careful there Whistler. You’re coming dangerously close to “hate speech”.

No, but seriously - Most people can’t be trusted, so we should have laws against sword ownership, which most people will abide by because they can be trusted.

Statistics showing high murder rates justify gun control, but statistics showing increasing murder rates after gun control are “just statistics.”

Don’t you know anything about double-think?

From the same web site:
police-recorded murders totaled 19,650 in the United States and 681 in England
police-recorded rapes totaled 95,770 in the United States and 5,759 in England
police-recorded robberies totaled 537,050 in the United States and 74,035 in England
police-recorded assaults totaled 1,029,810 in the United States and 228,636 in England
police-recorded burglaries totaled 2,501,500 in the United States and 1,164,583 in England
police-recorded motor vehicle thefts totaled 1,395,200 in the United States and 493,489 in England.

ellinas on March 6, 2007 at 07:25 pm

ellinas you’re such a phoney.  First of all the US has FIVE TIMES THE POPULATION of the United Kingdom.

Here’s some more information from the source on the crime trends in the US and disarmed England:

Comparing 1981 crime rates from victim surveys to rates for 1995 (the latest year that U.S. and English surveys have in common), the rate of victimization from --

* robbery rose 81% in England (4.2 per 1,000 population rising to 7.6), but fell 28% in the United States (7.4 dropping to 5.3) (figure 1)
* assault rose 53% in England (13.1 rising to 20.0), but declined 27% in the United States (12.0 dropping to 8.8) (figure 2)
* burglary doubled in England (40.9 per 1,000 households rising to 82.9), but was cut in half in the United States (105.9 declining to 47.5) (figure 3)
* motor vehicle theft rose 51% in England (15.6 rising to 23.6), but stayed virtually unchanged in the United States (10.6 in 1981, 10.8 in 1995) (figure 4).

As a result of different crime trends in the two countries --

* the U.S. victim survey rate for robbery was nearly double England’s in 1981, but in 1995 the English robbery survey rate was 1.4 times America’s (figure 1)
* the English victim survey rate for assault was slightly higher than America’s in 1981, but in 1995 the English assault survey rate was more than double America’s (figure 2)
* the U.S. victim survey rate for burglary was more than double England’s in 1981, but in 1995 the English burglary survey rate was nearly double America’s (figure 3)
* the English victim survey rate for motor vehicle theft was 1.5 times America’s in 1981, but in 1995 the English survey rate for vehicle theft was more than double America’s (figure 4).

So we had more crime in the US in 1981.  Since then the crime rate in the UK has been climbing while ours has been declining.

I’m glad that you’re in favor of crime growing and not declining.

Wow. England has an incredibly high theft rate.

Why did you bring those figures up? Why didn’t you highlight the fact that violent crime has been on a steady decline in the U.S. while, at the same time, steadily climbing in England? Why did you just give the crime numbers without explaining that England has about one fifth of the population?

I think we can guess why.

Proof, CIA World Factbook says 60 Million.

By the way a few years ago I read that you can’t get a gun in England unless you lived in Northern Ireland.  Apparently they thought that guns can reduce crime in some situations.  I don’t know if that’s still the case.

Homicides per 100,000
USA - 5.9
England - 1.62

Of course we have the highest prison population of 2 million or 740 per 100,000, UK 124

What’s the trend?  We’ve always been a fairly high crime (including murder)country, but I think the trend is somewhat favorable for the US as compared to the UK.

If you’re referring to the gun ownership rate, I’d counter that in ND we own more guns than average but have a lower murder rate than the UK.

Ok
Here’s one for you. Vermont - with the most lenient gun laws in the country that regularly earn them an F- from those assholes who grade gun laws without concern for homicide rates; where one can carry a loaded, concealed, unregistered weapon to one’s hearts content; where you can buy guns out of the newspaper classifieds; regularly has a single digit number of homicides and has a population approaching 700,000.

That alone should shut all the gun-banning kooks up once and for all… let alone the faux samurai sword-banners…

Vermont has a population density of 65 per sq. mi.
ND 9.3 per sq. mi.
Here in NH it’s 137. The closer to the Mass (809psm) border the higher the crime rate and that’s when the gun control nuts come out. I live outside Concord and we still leave keys in cars doors unlocked but travel 15 miles south and whole other story.
I personally don’t care for guns, but I never want the right to own one taken away from me either. Not all lefties are gun control freaks.
Although if I lived in DC, LA or NYC I may see things in a different perspective. Especially on a hot summer nite when tempers tend to rise.

Why would you have a different perspective? Handguns are banned in Washington D.C., yet they’ll sometimes carry the title of “handgun murder capital of America”. Are you under the impression that criminals follow laws or something?

The city of Chicago is another one that will sometimes carry the title of “handgun murder capital of America”. Not surprisingly, handguns are banned there as well.

likwidshoe on March 6, 2007 at 09:32 pm

lik they are banned in nyc, la, and boston too. not in miami though.

Theres no doubt criminals have and always will carry handguns, but IMO in heavy populated areas gun control is needed or you may have a scene from the old west where disagreements are settled by the quickest draw.
Build more prisons?
Tougher laws for illegal handguns?

Thats really stupid Mark, John Lotts study showed that when people were able to legally defend themselves crime goes down.

People are shooting each other in cities where guns are illegal.

By the way, there was no wild west, that’s an invention of Hollywood.

Reminds me of an interview of Tom Clancy that I read.  (Playboy?)

In The Hunt for Red October he gave the Russians a fictional silent drive for their sub.  Clancy said he was told that a Congressman called up the Pentagon demanding to know why the Russians developed one first.

Why should I point out the obvious?
I never claimed that the subjects of Queen Betty II were peacefull. As far as weapons are concerned my views are very liberal. All law abiding citizens should be able to own weapons to their hearts content. And I realy mean this. Knovk youself out.
As for me, I collect WWI and WWII rifles. It is fun shooting them. My favorite is the M1 Garand.

The only legitimate role of government with regard to economics is to prevent fraud and provide a remedy- civil and criminal penalties- in case of fraud.

People have the mistaken notion that the free market has no rules.  But it most certainly does.  All our problems are due to government meddling.
