Dissension In The Ranks For ND Congressional Delegation

In response to Howard Dean’s claim that we cannot win in Iraq, which prompted a ND Rep. Earl Pomeroy to tell Dean to “shut up,” ND Senator Kent Conrad offered this lame defense:

Well my understanding is that he said that in the context of we don’t change course and we don’t change direction. This is not so certain as some as thought because this has been the statement of many including prominent Republicans over the last three months that we’ve got to change course.

Audio available at the link.
I have to wonder where Conrad’s priorities lay. With his constituents, who strongly support President Bush and the war in Iraq? Or with defending his national party, who have taken to defeatism and calling for immediate withdrawal from Iraq?
Dean’s statements were foolhardy and he should be held responsible for them. Instead, Sen. Conrad seems more interested in helping Dean wiggle out of responsibility for making them even while another ND congressman is taking a strong stance against them.
It has become clear that Conrad is no longer representing the interests of his state, but rather the interests of his national party.

    Not really.

And yet, if he ran again the majority of North Dakotans would probably vote for him again.

I don’t know how you can say that. The majority of North Dakotans disapprove of his job as President.

Senator Conrad is out of touch with North Dakotans. In reading his “understanding” of Howard Dean’s position one would think he’s out of touch in Washington.

Davey, I’m not sure you were alive the last time North Dakota voted for a Democrat for President.

    ND supports Bush.

What’s the causal connection between those two statements?

I posted a link to a poll showing that only 43% of North Dakotans approve of Bush’s job as President, while 53% disapprove. You “refuted” that by pointing out that North Dakota has voted for every Republican president since Goldwater. And yes, those scare quotes are there for a reason.

This may be tough for you to understand, but it is possible to support the Republican Party and disapprove of Bush’s job as president. Apparently, that’s what a lot of North Dakotans do.

How is that the case? You can really hate Bush and still be a Republican.

The point I’m making is that disapproval of the President does not translate into approval for Democrats.

Nor did I ever maintain that. All I’m trying to establish is that when you said North Dakotans “strongly support President Bush,” you were incorrect.

That implies that they would approve more of a Dem President.

    How?

If I were you I’m not sure I’d let one little poll convince you of that. The majority of North Dakotans voted for Bush. There is no more tangible evidence of support than that.

The point I’m making is that disapproval of the President does not translate into approval for Democrats. Nor does disapproval of the President overall translate into disapproval over the war in Iraq.

North Dakotans are no different than most disillusioned Americans at this point, just voting for the lesser of two evils.

Because ND has voted Republican for President since time out of mind. If Bush ran against Kerry again, Kerry would lose. Might be different if Bush had run against a Joe Lieberman, but the chances of Lieberman getting the Pres. nomination aren’t very good.

Which goes to the reason why so many North Dakotan’s reject Dem. Presidential candidates.
