Dishonest Sioux Manufacuting Company Loves North Dakota Democrats

Here’s a list of government grants and contracts for Sioux Manufacturing (SMC), the company that just paid $2 million to settle a lawsuit over faulty helmets, many of them secured by Senators Byron Dorgan and Kent Conrad as well as Representative Earl Pomeroy.

By my count, that’s $11.5 million in grants and contracts from the federal government, plus the unspecified contract for vehicle armor and the $72 million contract for helmets Sioux Manufacturing just got after to replace the faulty helmets the company had already sold the government.

According to this 2003 article from KXMC out of Minot Sioux Manufacturing gets all but 3% of its business from government contracts.  In September of last year it was reported that SMC had $32 million in revenue the previous year.

What we have here is a tribal business that is entirely dependent on government contracts secured for it by Senator Byron Dorgan (among others) and not only managed to keep one of its government contracts despite knowingly manufacturing faulty products to fill it but actually managed to get that contract renewed for tens of millions of dollars.

Something here stinks.

I called Senator Dorgan’s office yesterday to get his reaction to this situation...and was directed to voicemail.

It appears as though this company will pretty much shut down when the government contracts run out.  Same with Hedgers company out in Killdeer.  The sad part is that our politicians claim these companies are great examples of economic development.  When you rely on the government for business (and politics), then you’re bound to be screwed at some point.

Halliburton, anyone? Those morons gave the troops tainted water and bad food. And Dick Cheney, the former CEO who still earns hundreds of thousands of dollars a year from the company, is still doing his thing.

Until you’re willing to complain about the GOP’s no-bid contracts with Halliburton, you look like a major tool when you complain about the ND delegation (the contracts they helped get to North Dakota brought jobs and money to the state, but some companies screwed up - hardly their fault). I did a couple searches and couldn’t find any posts about Halliburton’s misconduct, only sarcastic posts complaining when other people bring up the issues.

So, you’re defense of this situation is to invoke Halliburton and say that I can’t be concerned about this graf unless I write about that company too?

Please.  A lot of people have gone after Haliburton.  Almost nobody is talking about SMC.

Nice try, Mr. Dorgan apologist, but no dice.

Dorgan shouldn’t be going after Haliburton’s no-bid contracts if his own selected company is failing miserably.

Rob, it’s as if you’re surprised that an enterprise on a reservation is dependent on government contracts.  :^)

(sorry, I know you’re not, but I couldn’t resist)

What an embarrassment!

...to the citizens of North Dakota
...to the Federal Government for United States attorney for North Dakota, Drew H. Wrigley’s comments that this was “an appropriate resolution”
...to the US Department of Defense for not taking their business elsewhere
...to the Soverign Spirit Lake Nation!

Heh. It’s not surprising at all, but when I write my posts I usually try to put them together for people who don’t immerse themselves in politics and current events on a daily basis.
