Disabled Democrat Senator Too Disabled To Debate But Is Still Running For Re-Election
Over a year ago Democrat South Dakota Senator Tim Johnson suffered stroke-like symptoms from brain bleeding that left him hospitalized. About eight months after he first fell ill Johnson’s supporters propped him up in front of an audience and declared that he was “back” and running for re-election despite the fact that he was still in a wheelchair, couldn’t stand on his own and was slurring his words so badly people were having trouble understanding him.
Now Johnson’s campaign staff is questioning whether or not he’ll appear in any debates against his Republican challenger Joel Dykstra. His campaign says he’s “close to normal,” but he’s still using a cane to ambulate and he still slurs his word.
Now, am I the only person recoiling in horror at the way Senator Johnson is, despite being clearly and substantially debilitated in his ability to do his job, clinging to his office and running for re-election for no other reason than resigning would allow South Dakota’s Republican Governor to appoint a Republican replacement?
Debating is pretty much the definition of what US Senators do. All due respect to Senator Johnson, and all partisan politics aside, if he can’t do his job he should step aside so that someone who is capable of representing the people of South Dakota can take it over.
