Did Romney Get A Helpful Prompt At The Debate
At the debate moderator Tim Russert asked Romney something of a trick question. The question was whether or not Romney would do what Reagan did in 1983. Now, obviously, most of the time Republicans would scramble to say that they’d do what Reagan did but in this context not so much. In 1983 Reagan instituted a tax hike on gasoline, so the question is a bit misleading.
Romney picks up on Russert’s subterfuge and answers with “I won’t raise taxes.” But just before he gives that response you hear someone whisper “he raised taxes.”
Was Romney getting a prompt? Who knows, but I doubt it. The odds of a wireless signal being beamed into Romney during the debate being picked up just long enough to catch this whisper (and nothing else) are slim. Like, getting struck by lightening slim.
When you consider also that just because we can hear the whisper doesn’t mean that Romney could or even did hear it, I think it’s pretty safe to dismiss this as some producer or pundit whispering to themselves in front of an open microphone.
