Did Roman Polanski Make Bail Because Of Obama? UPDATE: Nope

Yes, Roman Polanski will get to leave jail on bail and live at his Swiss chalet while awaiting extradition.
We hope that he’ll stay at his Swiss chalet, anyway.

A Swiss court has accepted film-maker Roman Polanski’s plea to be freed on bail from a Swiss jail where he is being held for a US child sex case.
Polanski has been wanted in the US since fleeing the country in 1978 after pleading guilty to having unlawful sex a year earlier with a 13-year-old girl. …
While on bail, Polanski would have to be kept under house arrest and electronic monitoring at his Swiss chalet, according to Associated Press news agency.
The ruling is not thought to affect the Swiss government’s ongoing assessment of whether it should extradite Polanski to the US.

I’m a little surprised he got bail. After all, Polanski is the very definition of a flight risk. He’s rich, and therefore highly mobile, and has spent the last three decades evading prosecution in the United States by fleeing to Europe.
But, as Ed Morrissey notes, this may have less to do with Polanski than US authorities not having filed an official request for extradition. The deadline for filing such is today. With a formal extradition request, I think the Swiss pretty much have to let Polanski go.
Releasing him on bail may be there way of stalling until US authorities move forward.
The question is, why in the world haven’t they made the official request to bring this high-profile fugitive and child rapist back to US justice? It lays with federal authorities to make that request. And, again, given how high-profile Polanski is it’s hard to imagine that the Obama administration isn’t involved with this.
Update: Per the comments, an official extradition request has been filed by the federal authorities. So it looks like this was just a stupid decision by the Swiss.

I don’t think it’s fair to point to Obama on this. Besides Rape and sex crimes is more of a Clinton specialty. Maybe Bill can bring Polanski back to the US, Jesse Jackson could offer some helpful ministering to the tiny little creep.

Not sure who you’re talking to, djer, but considering the source, no one cares anyway!

  • djer

The problem Rob, is that you take at face value what you read on other right wing blogs and go with them without doing any checking on your own. Then after you write very suggestive headlines and article, then you go OOPS.

  • djer

The point was poofie, that Rob and Morrissey tried to make this about Obama.

  • Lioncourt

Aw, our soi dissant jd blowed it.

We are talking about the Swiss court dumba$$. The extradition hearing which he is entitled to in the Swiss Court. That is the process that bikebubba wants sped up.

  • Lioncourt

This is the kind of nonsense that got “speedy trial” inserted as a right into the Constitution.

If you want to try to convince Polanski to file a speedy trial motion than go for it. But I don’t think he is that concerned about his speedy trial rights.

  • Lioncourt

The US Embassy in Bern made a formal request to the Federal Office of Justice in Switzerland for his extradition on October 24, 2009.

But don’t let the facts get in the way of a good smear against Obama.

  • djer

The point Rob, is that you shoot from and the hip and print without the slightest questioning of the source. And because you are so intent on attaching everything wrong with the country to Obama including the Polanski matter that you are more than willing to print whatever is put before you.

Then you go OOPs. That’s the problem, not the error, Rob, that you so willing believe what is put in front of you even something as ridiculous as this tripe you chose to print..

  • lock’em’up

I care Prouche (see what I did there? I put Proof and douche together. Clever.)

    You said it.

I’m sure that Rob will be hurt every time he reads your post. And I care.

Today is a red number day for our calendars! Our soi disant “jd” and “veteran” got one right! Be sure to mark it carefully, so you can say one day “I was there and I saw it happen.”

  • sayanything-342

I seriously doubt Obama would help a white guy unless there was something in it for The One.

  • Lioncourt

My take; exactly why does it take so darned long to extradite a convicted felon? A hearing, yes, but you provide the conviction papers, get positive ID, it should be over in a week or less.Under Swiss law Polanski gets an opportunity to contest the extradition. One month is not a terribly long time in any justice system.

  • sayanything-42

Aw, our soi dissant jd blowed it.

Polanski already stands convicted. He fled before sentencing.

I’m sure djer will be right on that…

  • Lioncourt

Maybe this is just fund raising. They hope he flees and they get to keep the $4.5 million.

  • djer

Once again, Rob, shoots from the hip before he has all the facts. Geesh, you would think that you would at the very least check this out yourself, considering that HotAir has been wrong on more than one occasion and shoots from the hip as well.

Not so good for your credibility, Rob. once again.

liquored up: Not nearly so clever as any of us might hope. (But maybe your Mom will post it on the ‘fridge for you?)

  • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ proof_positive

It wasn’t Rob, if that’s what you’re hinting at! Or did you jump to a conclusion of your own?

  • lock’em’up

Quick Quiz: in the last day, on sayanythingblog, who wrote, “Some people get their exercise jumping to conclusions”?

  • lock’em’up

Did Charles Manson get out of prison because of Obama? Nope.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

I fixed the post. Thanks, Lioncourt, for pointing that out.

  • bikebubba

Lioncourt, it’s been two months and counting since he was arrested on a pretty much open and shut case. This is the kind of nonsense that got “speedy trial” inserted as a right into the Constitution.

  • bikebubba

Lioncourt appears to be right. That doesn’t preclude other “failures to complete paperwork,” of course.

My take; exactly why does it take so darned long to extradite a convicted felon? A hearing, yes, but you provide the conviction papers, get positive ID, it should be over in a week or less.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

    And I corected my error.

So what? You’ve never made a mistake?

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

    *shrugs*

Everyone makes mistakes. I correct mine when I make them.
