Despite Already Proposed 39% Increase In Funding, ND Higher Education Board Wants More

In his recently-released budget Governor John Hoeven proposed a 39% increase in higher education funding. The state Board of Higher Education says that’s not enough, asking for another $8.2 million in funding which would raise the university system’s overall state funding to about $100,000,000/year.

FARGO – Another $8.2 million is needed for higher education beyond the $91.8 million in base funding that the governor has proposed, the North Dakota University System chancellor said today.
The state Board of Higher Education agreed today during a conference call meeting to ask the Legislature for additional dollars.

According to the article Chancellor Bill Goetz also wants an additional $11 million in “one time” spending for a new “information technology facility.” But here’s what’s really galling:

Tuition and fees at North Dakota’s two-year campuses exceed national and regional averages by more than 20 percent, according to a tuition and fees study presented to board members today.

So North Dakota students are already paying 20% more than the national average for tuition. That is on top of North Dakota already being 2nd in the nation in per-capita expenditures on higher education.
North Dakotans are pretty much paying more for higher education than any other citizens in America, and we’re supposed to believe that’s not enough?
We shouldn’t be debating how much to spend on higher education right now. We should be talking about the level of incompetence it takes to run the best-funded higher education system in America and still complain about not having enough funding.

    I tell ‘em and I tell ‘em again;

Once you hand a welfare organization entitlement cash, they’ll come back every year calling it “funding”.

CUT SALARIES, folks. Make the “teachers” earn it…

ND, with a population equal to Ohmaha, has the same number of public universities as Michigan. If you go through their catalogs, and look at degree requirements, you’ll see several are nothing more than glorified high schools. The 4 largest campuses account for over 80% of the total student enrollment. The rest exist, not for their educational value, but the different cities want the economic impact.

The greed of Nd’s education cabal knows no bounds. Nd’s media monopoly enables it in exchange for cheap material.

The only people who should get any money are the students…Give the parents and students a tuition break…that’s it.

No more money for bodyguards at NDSU for Chapman.
Tom Clifford was my type of college president. One who served his country in the military and than served his state as a college president during difficult years. One who would never ask for a bodyguard. It’s time to man-up…

So the current budget was full of one-time spending. They've taken that and made it an ongoing commitment just like they plan for this 11 million.

"The state Board of Higher Education says that's not enough, asking for another $8.2 million in funding"

And when the legislature ends up giving them an additional $5 million, they'll scream about the $3.2 million CUT to their budget.

This is of course on top of the massive 20 percent or so they got last year.

Its all those Minnesota students ND tax dollars are educating.

Maybe if ND shut down, say, 7 of the 11 campuses, it could save a few bucks.

    Good point.
