Despite Already Proposed 39% Increase In Funding, ND Higher Education Board Wants More
In his recently-released budget Governor John Hoeven proposed a 39% increase in higher education funding. The state Board of Higher Education says that’s not enough, asking for another $8.2 million in funding which would raise the university system’s overall state funding to about $100,000,000/year.
FARGO – Another $8.2 million is needed for higher education beyond the $91.8 million in base funding that the governor has proposed, the North Dakota University System chancellor said today.
The state Board of Higher Education agreed today during a conference call meeting to ask the Legislature for additional dollars.
According to the article Chancellor Bill Goetz also wants an additional $11 million in “one time” spending for a new “information technology facility.” But here’s what’s really galling:
Tuition and fees at North Dakota’s two-year campuses exceed national and regional averages by more than 20 percent, according to a tuition and fees study presented to board members today.
So North Dakota students are already paying 20% more than the national average for tuition. That is on top of North Dakota already being 2nd in the nation in per-capita expenditures on higher education.
North Dakotans are pretty much paying more for higher education than any other citizens in America, and we’re supposed to believe that’s not enough?
We shouldn’t be debating how much to spend on higher education right now. We should be talking about the level of incompetence it takes to run the best-funded higher education system in America and still complain about not having enough funding.
