Democrats Trying To End War By Pretending To Help The Troops
Four and a half years into the war in Iraq there is no doubt that our military is beginning to feel the strain. Repeated deployments have many military families feeling frustrated and just plain worn out. But is it right for Democrats to exploit that weariness not for the express purpose of helping relieve it (though, admittedly, that may be some of the motivation) but rather to deny the President the means to continue prosecuting this war?
...a proposal by Democratic Senator Jim Webb of Virginia—a Vietnam war veteran—is under discussion that would require US troops to spend as much time at home as on their most recent tours overseas before being re-deployed.
The proposal is close to winning enough Republican support for approval, The New York Times reported Saturday.
If approved, the measure would force US military commanders to withdraw troops on a much faster timeline than the one the top US commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus, presented to Congress on September 10.
This is essentially the same strategy as the “cut off funds for the war” strategy, but instead of cutting off access to appropriations the Democrats are cutting off access to personnel. And while this may be a more palatable anti-war move in terms of PR, it’s just as despicable.
General Petraeus has al Qaeda in Iraq on the ropes. Every day we hear new stories from Iraq about security forces stepping up, people coming together and (perhaps more importantly) the government organizing itself into a political body that can actually govern the country. But even as we make that progress Democrats are still throwing up road blocks and generally being as unhelpful as possible while covering their efforts with phony-baloney rhetoric about wanting to help the troops.
