Democrats To Obama: Say That Sotomayor Misspoke Already!
It seems as though there’s growing pressure on Obama from his own party to explain away Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor’s inflammatory racial comments as her having simply “misspoken.”
Which, I guess, puts lie to the spin that has been coming from the left about how her statements weren’t a big deal at all. If they’re not a big deal, why the
“She misspoke,” said Lanny Davis, a White House lawyer and spokesman for President Bill Clinton. “Every day that goes by that they don’t say she misspoke and she used the wrong words … they just feed it and give it life and give Rush [Limbaugh] and [Sean] Hannity more airtime unnecessarily.”
Said Democratic strategist Chris Lehane: “In this day and age, six or seven or eight weeks is a long time to go without addressing an issue that can potentially take on a life of its own and evolve and grow.”
The problem with the “she misspoke” spin is that…Sotomayor didn’t misspeak. Not any more than Obama misspoke when he talked about all the bible-thumping gun clingers out in rural America.
They meant what they said. It’s just now that what they said is politically inconvenient, they don’t want to have meant it.
