Democrats: Normally We Wouldn’t Approve Someone Like Geithner But This Time It’s Special
Obama’s Treasury Department pick Tim Geithner got the ok of the Senate Finance Committee (with a no vote from five Repubilcans on the committee), but even the Democrats who voted for Geithner were less than enthused about doing so:
Even Democrats who voted for the nomination said they were disappointed in Geithner’s actions.
Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., said that in normal times he would oppose Geithner but “these are not normal times.”
So because we’re in a much-hyped economic downturn, suddenly it’s ok to put a guy who can’t even run Turbo Tax in charge of the IRS?
That’s not judgment we can believe in.
Senator Michael Enzi (one of the committee that voted no on Geithner) pointed out that nominees with tax errors far less serious than Geithner’s had withdrawn:
Those voting no said that they did not believe Geithner had been candid in his answers on why he failed to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes. They said they viewed this as a serious error for an official who would head the agency that oversees the IRS.
“I am disappointed that we are even voting on this,” said Sen. Michael Enzi, R-Wyo. “In previous years, nominees who made less serious errors in their taxes than this nominee have been forced to withdraw.”
Yes, but Enzi was chosen by The One. And The One can’t afford to have another nominee withdraw.
