Democrats: Farm Aid Not Enough

But then, it never is.
Something we talked about on tonight’s podcast was the way the current system for agriculture aid victimizes farmers. A lot of political leaders in agriculture states make a really big deal out of how much aid they bring in for farmers and ranchers every year (see: Earl Pomeroy in the link above), yet what they never make a big deal out of is trying to fix the problems that cause these farmers and ranchers to need federal aid every year.
While politicians like Earl Pomeroy make themselves out to be heroes fighting for farmers by demanding ever more agriculture aid the truth is that they’re really just trying to make farmers ever more beholden to the federal government. This is how people like Pomeroy keep themselves in office. Rather than addressing root causes, Pomeroy goes for band aid fixes so that every year he can be the “hero” who brings home more agriculture aid for farmers.
That may be good for Earl Pomeroy, but I just don’t think it’s good for farmers.

I have found myself having to get up, get dressed and go to work twice this week, and tomorrow’s not looking any better. I would like to know what Earl Pomeroy is going to do for ME.

I have way too much homework to do; it’s disastrous how hard our professors work us! Can’t the government do it for me???

If it is not enough that means that Earl and his comrades are INEFFECTIVE.

They’ll never be more self-reliant; they’ll just be out of jobs. (or, hopefully, in jobs which the market can sustain)

If there’s any theories about how to fix the system and keep the farmers farming, by all means link up to it, but I’ve kept an eye on farm policy for awhile (weird, but true) and never seen a good solution aside from letting the market run its course.

Free, I want Pomeroy to be effective in helping farmers be more self-reliant, not effective in getting them more and more money.
