Democrats: Farm Aid Not Enough

But then, it never is.

Something we talked about on tonight's podcast was the way the current system for agriculture aid victimizes farmers. A lot of political leaders in agriculture states make a really big deal out of how much aid they bring in for farmers and ranchers every year (see: Earl Pomeroy in the link above), yet what they never make a big deal out of is trying to fix the problems that cause these farmers and ranchers to need federal aid every year.

While politicians like Earl Pomeroy make themselves out to be heroes fighting for farmers by demanding ever more agriculture aid the truth is that they're really just trying to make farmers ever more beholden to the federal government. This is how people like Pomeroy keep themselves in office. Rather than addressing root causes, Pomeroy goes for band aid fixes so that every year he can be the "hero" who brings home more agriculture aid for farmers.

That may be good for Earl Pomeroy, but I just don't think it's good for farmers.
