Democrats Don’t Think Iraq Is Like Vietnam
Or, more accurately, they don’t think Iraq is like Vietnam in the way that President Bush thinks Iraq could be like Vietnam. Because left-wing demagogues have been trying to paint Iraq as Vietnam since, well, pretty much the day we invaded.
But their rejection of the President’s argument does illustrate the dishonesty inherent in all of those Vietnam comparisons the left has made in the past. They want to invoke the unpopularity and controversy of the Vietnam war, as well as the popular uprising among the people of America that ended it, while ignoring the consequences of our giving up. And by consequences I mean millions slaughtered in Cambodia, hundreds of thousands imprisoned in “re-education camps” while millions more tried to flee southeast Asia in a fog of desperation that saw many of them risking the dangers of the Pacific in little more than canoes.
The cut-and-run liberals don’t want you thinking about that aspect of Vietnam. But the President does, because he feels Americans should know that a sudden withdrawal from Iraq isn’t the end of our troubles that stem from the middle east.
