Democrats Considering “Lifestyle Taxes” To Pay For Nationalized Health Care

It’s not news that the Democrats want to tax things like soda and beer to help pay for the massive national health care entitlements they’re proposing. And critics of those taxes such as myself have routinely pointed out how these taxes are little more than an attempt to control how we live our lives.
Now the Democrats are actually referring to the taxes as “lifestyle taxes.” Which is a blatant admission of what the real intent here. Government control.

The Senate Finance Committee is considering raising taxes on alcohol and imposing a new levy on soda and other naturally sweetened drinks to help pay for overhauling health care. The committee calls them “lifestyle tax proposals,” saying the levies would slow sales of unhealthy products that contribute to rising medical costs.

The very idea that the government should tax certain types of lifestyles should be anathema in a free society. After all, does being free not mean the freedom to be unhealthy as well as the freedom to be healthy? Who gets to decide what kind of lifestyles we can and cannot lead?
Why are soda drinkers more worth of taxation than vegetable juice drinkers?
Allowing the government to tax us based on our lifestyles is a good way to invite the government in to dictate what our lifestyles should be.

I am sick and tired of these ass holes trying to take more of our money. I drink a lot of Diet Coke I guess I am going to have to poney up eh?

Unfortunately, no matter what you drink, eat, drive, play with, or whatever, they will find a way to tax it. Plain and simple. And it still won’t be nearly enough to pay for all these welfare programs.

I remember when Sheryl Crow and the gang were saying that there should be a massive tax on toilet paper and/or we should have it rationed. When that happens, I think it’s going to blow. There won’t be anything left to tax soon. The government will have to start taking away any tax favored status’ and that means Indian reservations, church, etc…
Things are about to get real ugly.

New directive rumored from Washington: “If it moves, control it. If you can’t control it, tax it. If you can’t tax it, give it a billion dollars.”

How about a tax on Democrats, progressives, liberals, left wingers, etc?

  • ProudinNC

You can tell they are truly in touch with those they claim to represent – I’d wager that the poor spend more on fast food and convenience store “luxuries” than the middle class. So this will hurt that group more than they realize.

I’m beginning to think the Cloward Piven strategy is at work. I was skeptical at first, but it’s looking more and more possible. Bankrupt the country with social programs it can’t support, and reset the balance.

Taxing Decorates … I love it.

The first sheet is free the next is $0.50

Just as soon as they have the fart regulator with the coin slots, each methane fart will cost you a dollar, paid in advance of release.

    Okay…let’s see.

Tax soda and other “unhealthy” products like alcohol and tobacco are, to help people be healthier. If it reduces sales of such products, then it brings in LESS tax revenue…so the taxes will have to go up, to increase revenue. If it doesn’t, then the health care costs will go up…so they will have to raise the taxes to bring in more revenue.

And it’s STILL a tax increase on the poor, because they DO drink sodas and alcohol and smoke. I thought the Obama administration wasn’t going to raise taxes AT ALL for the poor and middle-class.

Tater? How about people pay for their own?

  • conundrum

If the libs don’t tax you the Insurance industry will. They already charge you more for being a smoker and next it will be if you are obese, or are genetically disposed towards certain diseases. The statistic gatherers should be the ones shot. With out that info they wouldn’t have any ‘facts’ to base increases on. Next time some one wants to take a survey tell them to f off

    “Lifestyle taxes”?

The left are little bastard dictators. Cry and decry as they might about such things, they are exactly that of which they decry.

    Taxes aren’t a bad thing.

They are when they are used as a tool for Marxist redistributionism and wasteful social spending. There are only a few legitimate reasons for govt to confiscate our money, and buying votes from identity groups is not one of them.

For a glimpse into the future, living in the Obamanation, just read this piece by Bruce Bialosky on Townhall:
    http://townhall.com/columnists/BruceBialosky/2009/06/08/what_europeanization_will_really_mean?page=full&comments=true

Of course we need to be more like them (the Euro’s), it would be un-p.c. not to be. In case I am subpoened to appear before any government tribunal to atone for my many transgressions, I will be sure to “go Euro” and not shower for about a week before my appearance!

Don’t forget that taxes help pay for the things you need and want. If we didn’t pay taxes we wouldn’t have nice roads to drive on, or semi-decent schools. And we wouldn’t be able to kick ass over in Iraq. Taxes aren’t a bad thing.

Funny how when the discussion turns to receiving discounts on health care for actually living healthy lifestyles those same people all geared up to tax our unhealthy habits are as quick to denounce any sort of reduced rate for you know actually being healthy.

That alone should be the clear indication that this is all about control and money. 2 things that the government should have little of.

how about taxing the real problem of poor health here in the US…

    fast food.

i remember a different america before the late 60′s, where there where a lot of trim high school students… including me. it all changed when mc donalds, burger king and pizza hut hit the community. now these a pizza palace and cheesesteak place every 30 ft. its the obvious cause of obesity and poor health all across this country. and, one of the main reasons other countries have better health and healthcare systems. they have fewer or no fast food dumps.

Taxation is theft. Our Founding Fathers so defined it, and then gave exceedingly narrow boundaries and justification for taxation. America is being ripped off, has been for the last 120 years. Time to starve these anti-American fucks to death.

Take back America. Or leave a mound of skulls to mark our passing. My 9lb fire ax is nice and sharp.

  • Milbrat

So, since the Congress is thinking of imposing a ‘lifestyle’ tax on all Americans to pay for healthcare; will the gay community be expected to pay a ‘lifestyle’ tax for their lifestyle choice?

  • Mark

How about a tax on “idiocy”!

At least the dems would be paying some sort of taxes!

  • http://suitepotato.blogspot.com/ sayanything-4808

If they’re going to tax lifestyles, does that mean a highway toll booth at Dino’s backside? I think it could.

More seriously, there is the component that living unhealthy lives even if by choice does through unavoidable empathy and sheer expedience require the medical treatment of the aftereffects.

    That point does remain.

What is your solution to this?

A waiver of expectation of services in our nation’s hospitals? An admission and fair warning statement to be signed for the insurance companies allowing them to not cover things directly attributable to their willful choices however ignorant and unwise? Or do you say since they pay for insurance they have a right to coverage despite the fact that it reduces insurance from covering a possibility to covering a predictable certainty?

Do you want to open that can of worms?

They will seize on this and use the kernel of truth, that our system is beset by the after effects of the people’s behavior and wrap it in opportunistic lies, the worst being that they “MUST DO SOMETHING NOW!!!”

A napkin is a convenience. Ketchup in a foil pouch is a convenience. They abort their own children as a convenience. Through convenient food they abort their own health. The people are mentally and emotionally addled and rife with chances for the predatory to further themselves.

I doubt it not at all that if we created a cheeseburger that had no calories and made their teeth whiter but was 50% saturated fats they’d gobble them down and die clutching their hearts even as they had the whitest smile.

  • http://suitepotato.blogspot.com/ sayanything-4808

Well we can’t all become a nation of fat eating sugar drink chugging smoke inhaling people and expect the results to be inexpensive can we?

Instead of empty platitudes about competition, can we please have some concrete brainstorming on how to pay for all this shit before the liberals point out for the billionth time that their opposition doesn’t have any plans while they do (their vile destructive nature notwithstanding not that it comes up in the msm) and thus since we “MUST DO SOMETHING” the default is to the only actual plan in town, theirs.

Credits and shit like that are just concept talk. We need something else. If we don’t start coming up with it soon, it will be far too late and Barbara Streisand and Megan f’n Fox will have more to say about your medical care than your doctor does.

VALUES PEOPLE. Back the basics. Enough of the high concept selective reasoning and flimsy thinking crap. If you do not get to the people and cut through to their sense of right and wrong, such that they choose to do the right thing, when they don’t they will in guilt listen to the liberals and hand themselves over to their power. I don’t think I want a century of f’n koombayah, rice cakes, overpriced sandals and all that touchy feely shit for morons and our lack of coherent response is fucking making that happen.

HA HA HA, REMEMBER THE SMOKING BANS? THAT IS WHEN THEY GOT THEIR FOOT IN THE DOOR AND NOW IT WILL NEVER END. EVER HEARD OF GEORGE ORWELL? EVER READ ABOUT AMERICAN HISTORY? WE WERE WARNED AND DIDN'T LISTEN OR LEARN, SO NOW WE WILL ALL PAY THE PRICE.
