Democrats Considering “Lifestyle Taxes” To Pay For Nationalized Health Care

It’s not news that the Democrats want to tax things like soda and beer to help pay for the massive national health care entitlements they’re proposing.  And critics of those taxes such as myself have routinely pointed out how these taxes are little more than an attempt to control how we live our lives.

Now the Democrats are actually referring to the taxes as “lifestyle taxes.”  Which is a blatant admission of what the real intent here.  Government control.

The Senate Finance Committee is considering raising taxes on alcohol and imposing a new levy on soda and other naturally sweetened drinks to help pay for overhauling health care. The committee calls them “lifestyle tax proposals,” saying the levies would slow sales of unhealthy products that contribute to rising medical costs.

The very idea that the government should tax certain types of lifestyles should be anathema in a free society.  After all, does being free not mean the freedom to be unhealthy as well as the freedom to be healthy?  Who gets to decide what kind of lifestyles we can and cannot lead?

Why are soda drinkers more worth of taxation than vegetable juice drinkers?

Allowing the government to tax us based on our lifestyles is a good way to invite the government in to dictate what our lifestyles should be.
