Democrats Are 0 For 40 When It Comes To Iraq Legislation
From The Politico:
As the congressional session lurches toward a close, Democrats are confronting some demoralizing arithmetic on Iraq.
The numbers tell a story of political and substantive paralysis more starkly than most members are willing to acknowledge publicly, or perhaps even to themselves.
Since taking the majority, they have forced 40 votes on bills limiting President Bush’s war policy.
Only one of those has passed both chambers, even though both are run by Democrats. That one was vetoed by Bush.
What does this tell us? Well, it tells me that opposition to the war in Iraq isn’t nearly as overwhelming as the left and media have been trying to tell us for some time. Politicians are a lot of things, but they aren’t stupid when it comes to the demands of their constituents. Most of them manage to stay in office for decades by, on headline issues, sticking to what their constituents want.
So what does it tell us when the Democrats can’t muster the sort of support they need to force a loss in Iraq? That most politicians in Congress are aware of the fact that most of their constituents don’t want a loss in Iraq.
The Democrats should know by now that they just don’t have enough support to end the war, and with things on the ground in Iraq going well that’s not about to change any time soon. So maybe they should quit trying to undermine Bush’s foreign policy and focus on something else.
