Democrats Against Free Speech?

I don't get this (via Backcountry Conservative).

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Democratic Party and 18 senators are objecting to a broadcasting company's plan to air on 62 TV stations a critical documentary about John Kerry's anti-war activities after he returned home from Vietnam three decades ago.

Sinclair Broadcast Group has asked its television stations - many of them in competitive states in the presidential election - to pre-empt regular programming to run the documentary as part of an hourlong program two weeks before the Nov. 2 election.

If you ask me this sort of thing is free speech. I don't get all this controversy since the campaign finance reform laws passed about where and when we can make political statements about candidates. This is America. As long as nobody engaging in libel or slander I see no reason why we should limit the time and place political expression regardless of who it helps, or hurts.

I'd be just as supportive of a decision to air an anti-Bush documentary immediately before the election.

I think the issue is that pre-McCain Feingold laws already on the books require equal time for the opposing view, I think.  I could be wrong.  Part of the problem is that the station is airing it without commericials, which could constitute a campaign contribution.  I’m not sure, but I think if they would show it with commercials, there wouldn’t be a problem.  I may not understand it properly, though.

I believe the pre-McCain/Feingold laws you speak of was the Fairness Doctrine.  It was a rule enforced by the FCC requiring that broadcast stations give equal time to opposing view points.  One of my first posts as a blogger was about the fairness doctrine.

Personally, I’m not for any of it.  Let television stations and radio stations broadcast what they want.  The thought of one type of political thinking “taking over” the media and brainwashing citizens is paranoia, especially with today’s plethora of media options (internet, radio, television, etc.).

Also, remember that the entertainment and television industries have been dominated by a liberal bias for decades now, yet right vs. left allegiances haven’t really changed all that much.  There’s still about the same number of people on each side.  The right just found other means of taking in their message (talk radio, internet, etc.) Now that trend is shifting back and more right-leaning views are finding their way into television (Fox).

So lets just keep the government out of the whole thing.

When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.
