Democrats Afraid Domestic Drilling Issue May Cost Them The White House
Rep. Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawaii, who will address the Democratic Caucus on Tuesday, says, “Energy is the one issue that is consuming all the political oxygen in the congressional races, especially the tight races, the ones where we’re in peril, and those we want.”
He also believes that if his party does not take the lead on comprehensive energy legislation soon, it could jeopardize the Democrats’ bid for the White House. The legislator from Hawaii says, “This is the issue where we’re having the daylights beat out of us by Republicans and [this issue] can tip close states. ... This is Senator Obama’s election to win.”
The thing is, even if Democrats come around on oil drilling does that really absolve them of their stupidity on the issue? Do we want to elect political leaders who make the right decisions for the right reasons? Or political leaders who are just doing what they have to do on an issue Americans are paying attention to right now so that they can get elected or re-elected?
Seems to me that Democrats have proven themselves to be dead wrong on this issue, and there’s no going back from that now.
On a related note, Rep. Pelosi is demanding that drilling’s proponents prove to her that drilling actually works. Perhaps oil companies should tell Pelosi that they could do that if she’d just let them drill.
