Democrats Downsize Venue For Obama’s Speech
This was a possibility yesterday, and now it’s a reality. Citing a weather report that really doesn’t look all that threatening for the big speech (they previously had said it would go off “rain or shine”) the Democrats are moving Obama’s acceptance speech from the 73,000 seat Bank of America stadium to the 20,000 Time-Warner Arena.
Democrats are significantly downsizing the final night of their national convention, moving the events — including President Obama’s acceptance speech — from Bank of America Stadium to the Time Warner Cable Arena because of threats of thunder and lightning.
Mr. Obama was slated to accept the Democratic presidential nomination Thursday night in the open-air football stadium before a crowd of more than 60,000. The basketball and hockey arena, however, seats just around 20,000.
Democrats, of course, are going to deny fiercely that this has anything to do with lackluster turn out for their convention and the possibility of lots and lots of empty seats, but Obama was trying to lower expectations for turnout days ago. He wouldn’t guarantee a packed house. “My main goal is not to worry about the logistics of the convention,” Obama told a local NBC News reporter. “My main goal is to communicate to the American people how we can move forward.”
