Democratic Decency

For those of you out there blaming Bush and the religious right for the FCC's recent broadcast decency crack-down, you'd better think again.

From Neal Boortz:

I know that many of you are fond of pinning the responsibility for the new, draconian FCC on George Bush and those evil Republicans. So ... this reminder. The FCC Commissioner who is pushing the hardest on all of this so-called "indecency" is Michael J. Copps. Copps is the former chief of staff to South Carolina's Democratic Senator Ernest Hollings, a Democrat. Hollings has never been known for his defense of first amendment rights for broadcasters. Copps is a Democrat, not a Republican.

This reminds me of how Republicans are often type-casted as closet racists. That may have been true in the past (I don't think so, but I'd be willing to hear arguments), but don't forget that the two highest-ranking minorities ever to hold office in our government are Condi Rice and Colin Powell, both of whom are part of the Bush administration.

This is what happens when people are judged by the content of their character, instead of their skin color.

Pay careful attention to what black victimologists have to say about the character of Powell and Rice…

Further to the point that Republicans are often called racists:

In the 2000 election, the old chestnut about the Confederate flag was raised, in particular in So. Carolina.  And the Republicans were by the Deomcrats blamed for specifically *NOT* taking a stand on the issue.

A look back in time will show that the then Governor of So.Carolina signed the bill that put the flag atop the state house.

What you may have guessed is that the governor was a Democrat.  What you may not have known is that Governor later went on to become a US Senator.

Senator Ernest Hollings, in fact.
