Democrat Leaker: Dems Will Draft Iraq Funding Bill Without Pullout Date, Heaps Of Pork

Well it’s about time, if true:

In grudging concessions to President Bush, Democrats intend to draft an Iraq war-funding bill without a timeline for the withdrawal of U.S. troops and shorn of billions of dollars in spending on domestic programs, officials said Monday.

While details remain subject to change, the measure is designed to close the books by Friday on a bruising veto fight between Bush and the Democratic-controlled Congress over the war. It would provide funds for military operations in Iraq through Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year.

Democratic officials stressed the legislation was subject to change. They spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to discuss provisions before a planned presentation to members of the party‘s rank and file later in the day.

So is this real or was this a planted leak by the Democrats to test out just how red-faced, spittle-flecked angry their base will be at this potential cave-in?

I’m guess that it is a planted leak, but that the Democrats will end up having to do this anyway.  There’s only so much longer the troops can go without funding before that becomes a major problem with the Democrats with mainstream voters.

The question is how many of them are going to vote for this and how many against it?  I can’t imagine this is unanimous and figure that unless this gets a significant number of Republican backers, Pelosi cannot get this passed.  I don’t think she has the votes on her side of the aisle alone.  It only needs 218 and I am betting that more than half the Dems vote against it.  If a bill fully funding the war and stripped of pork and deadlines is put before Congress, Republicans will vote for it and Democrats by and large probably won’t.  The fact that they porked it up and put in withdrawl dates made it impossible to pass without veto the first time and if they strip that, it will be even more impossible for Dems to vote for without consequences in 2007.

How does this not give Repubs a victory and make the Dems appear even more weak and worthless?  They will be attacked by the Repubs and moderates for not doing it in the first place or soon enough and attacked by the Moonbats for not ending the war.  Catch 22.  There is nothing good that can come out of this for the Dems.  And if 2006 was about Iraq and they got their mandate, their supporters gotta be all kinds of pissed off for the results they are getting.

The Democrat Party is fracturing over their inability to end the war immediately. As I said they would last September.
