Democrat Fund Flops
A new political group set up to help Democrats win control of Congress with a last-minute advertising blitz brought in $3 million as of last week, leaving the effort far short of its reported fund-raising goals.
The September Fund was created last month by a top Democratic operative, Harold Ickes, to combat an anticipated pre-election onslaught of advertising by Republican groups. The fund reportedly hoped to raise between $10 million and $25 million, but its filing yesterday with the Internal Revenue Service indicated the total received through October 18 was only $3 million.
Seems to me that if Democrats were truly riding a groundswell of popular support to election victory in November they wouldn’t be missing fund goals by $7 – 22 million.
At best this means the Democrats’ don’t have the necessary amount of support from the public to retake a majority in either house of Congress. At worst, it means that while dissatisfaction with Republicans might be enough to give the Dems an election day victory it will probably only be a victory by default.
I’ve been saying for a while now that if Republicans lose this election it will be because of their own actions in shooting themselves in the foot on issues like spending and illegal immigration, and not because Americans have found Democrat policies on things like the war in Iraq (if you can even say that they have a policy for Iraq outside of “make it look like a hopeless failure”) and Social Security. I think this lackluster performance in fund raising for the Dems is more evidence in support of that conclusion.
