Democrat: Balanced Budget Amendment Would Make Raising Taxes “Virtually Impossible”
Hey, that sounds like a good thing, but not so much to hear it from Rep. Steny Hoyer:
(CNSNews.com) – House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D.-Md.) said on the House floor last night that if the balanced budget amendment Republicans are supporting is ratified and included in the Constitution it would make it “virtually impossible” to raise taxes.
“In order to pay our bills, Republicans would require us to pass a Constitutional amendment that would permanently enshrine their partisan budget priorities in law and make it virtually impossible to raise revenue,” Hoyer said.
Who knew that balancing the budget was a partisan issue. I thought Democrats wanted to balance the budget too.
I think his real point is that a BBA would require spending hikes to be tied to tax hikes, which would significantly reduce the public’s appetite for growth in government. After all, it’s easy to be for bigger government when the spending is just put on the national credit card for some future generation to pay off. It’s a lot harder when you’ll be footing the bill.Tags: balanced budget amendment, deficits, national debt, steny hoyer, Taxes
