Democracy On The March In Qatar

Hmm....

DOHA (Reuters) - U.S. ally Qatar plans to hold landmark elections next year for the Gulf country's first parliament as part of democratic reforms.

Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabr al-Thani told a forum on democracy late on Saturday that elections laws would be ready by the summer.

"We expect they (elections) will take place by the beginning of next year," he said.

The election is likely to please Washington which is promoting political, economic and social reforms throughout the Arab world since invading Iraq and deposing Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. Qatar hosted a U.S. command center for the 2003 war on Iraq.

Reached for comment, Democrat party chairman Howard Dean indicated that America is losing in the middle east and Democrat Rep. Jack Murtha stated that our very presence in the middle east is doing nothing but creating more terrorists.

The cous cous I just ate tasted really good. That’s a direct result of the U.S.-led War in Iraq.

Captain Obfuscation rides again.  You can’t deny that we’re spreading freedom to the middle east, so you just muddy the waters with retarded arguments because that’s easier.

But, on an unrelated note, thanks for changing your Gravatar.  Seriously, that mullet was getting to me.

Rob,

That’s what happens when things don’t go well for the lefties.

They just can’t accept that things may change for the better over there.

And you can’t believe that every positive development in the middle east is a direct result of the U.S. Military. Correlation does not imply causation. You can’t credit the U.S. for Qatar for the same reasons I can’t blame them for Palestine and Iran. We don’t control everything; some things just happen on their own.

Dave,

I’ll take your point that "correlation does not imply causation." You don’t believe the present administration and our military actions had anything to do with this. I personally will take the coincidence and give the present administration credit.

After all, since we now have honest people and actual grownups in the White House, we may have an effective policy for the Middle East. I will take Bush’s military and Rice’s State Department over past failures anyday.

Yes, Davey, some things just happen on their own.  But when America goes to the middle east to spread democracy and then some countries in the middle east begin to embrace democracy without our having to prompt them it is not unreasonable to say that one had something to do with the other.

If the police raid a crack house in a bad neighborhood and the next day a crack house across the street moves out...is it safe to say that increased police action in that neighborhood caused the second crack house to move away?

I’d say so.  But I guess you don’t...apparently because admitting that the President got something right with foreign policy is a big no-no or something.

Given that Qatar has expressly been moving in this direction for years, it’s hard to pin this on the Iraq war or Bush’s policies absent some other evidence.

Yes, and at this same time "Palestine" elected a terrorist group to represent them politically, and Iran’s new "president" is a tyrant. Can I blame America for this, saying that they’ve caused such turmoil in the Muslim world that other countries are reacting with violence? Not unless I’m a lazy political pundit who filters all news with a "Bush is bad" viewpoint.

But if you want to keep doing the exact opposite of that (replace "Bush is bad" with "Bush rocks!"wink, by all means, continue.

Oh Davey, you get so bitter when you come out looking like a fool.

Cheer up.  You’re right every once in a while.

Good points. I especially liked the part where you rebutted my argument.

I already rebutted your argument.  You said the same stupid thing again, so I decided just to mock you.
