“Deficit Hawk” Kent Conrad Wants To Use Deficit Reduction Process For…Passing Health Care?
Senator Kent Conrad has been an absolute marvel of duplicity of late.
The self-styled “deficit hawk” has recently caved on his promises to his constituents (which oppose the health care take over by a roughly 2/3′s majority) not to use the budget reconciliation process to pass a health care bill. He himself has been quoted previously saying that process, originally intended to make budgeting and deficit reduction easier by allowing such bills to pass the Senate with a mere 51 vote majority, was not appropriate for passing bills such as the health care bill. But now he is acting as the chairman of the Senate Budget Committee to use the reconciliation process to pass the health care bill.
And what makes that betrayal even more amazing is that Conrad has simultaneously been pushing to create a new deficit reduction process outside of the budget reconciliation process. One that’s more complicated. One that adds another layer of needless bureaucracy to the budget process.
Meaning that Kent Conrad wants to use the existing, easy-to-use deficit reduction process to pass health care while creating a new, more arduous process to reducing deficits.
Unbelievable.
