Defending The American Dream Summit: Mike Huckabee

The most exciting thing about Mike Huckabee is that I believe he’s the only Presidential candidate talking about replacing the current income tax with a consumption tax (a/k/a a national sales tax).  That’s what the Fair Tax is, and it’s nice to hear a mainstream candidate like Huckabee talk about it even if he is just slightly ahead of Ron Paul in the polls.

Outside of that, Huckabee’s speech was the usual spiel of “let’s cut taxes” and “let’s limit spending,” but that’s a hard line to buy coming from a guy like Huckabee who has a lengthy record of raising taxes as the Governor of Arkansas and supports decidedly non-limited-government initiatives such as a national smoking ban.

So yeah, Huckabee sounds like a good candidate, but to this observer he comes off as insincere.  His deeds don’t match his rhetoric.

Huckabee’s a really great speaker as well. I really wish he wasn’t on the “government needs to fix things” bandwagon, though.

Mike Huckabee is not the only one.  Hunter and Tancredo also support the FairTax, and Ron Paul wants no tax at all.  However, Mike Huckabee has been the candidate that has raised the FairTax banner higher than anyone else.  That’s why I started supporting him in the first place.  Than I learned more about him and I will walk to the ends of the earth for him.

Of the FairTax, Huckabee asserts that it’s…

• SIMPLE, easy to understand
• EFFICIENT, inexpensive to comply with and doesn’t cause less-than-optimal business decisions for tax minimization purposes
• FAIR, FLAT, and FAMILY FRIENDLY, loophole-free, and everyone pays their share
• LOW TAX RATE is achieved by broad base with no exclusions
• PREDICTABLE, doesn’t change, so financial planning is possible
• UNINTRUSIVE, doesn’t intrude into our personal affairs or limit our liberty
• VISIBLE, not hidden from the public in tax-inflated prices or otherwise
• PRODUCTIVE, rewards - rather than penalizes - work and productivity

A detailed benefits analysis of the plan (from The FairTax Book) explains Huckabee’s ardent advocacy:

For individuals:
• No more tax on income - make as much as you wish
• You receive your full paycheck - no more deductions
• You pay the tax when you buy “at retail” - not “used”
• No more double taxation (e.g. like on current Capital Gains)
• Reduction of “pre-FairTaxed” retail prices by 20%-30%
• Adding back 29.9% FairTax maintains current price levels
• FairTax would constitute 23% portion of new prices
• Every household receives a monthly check, or “pre-bate”
• “Prebate” is “advance tax payback” for monthly consumption to poverty level
• FairTax’s “prebate” ensures progressivity, poverty protection
Finally, citizens are knowledgeable of what their tax IS
• Elimination of “parasitic” Income Tax industry
• NO MORE IRS. NO MORE FILING OF TAX RETURNS by individuals
• Those possessing illicit forms of income will ALSO pay the FairTax
• Households have more disposable income to purchase goods
• Savings is bolstered with reduction of interest rates

For businesses:
• Corporate income and payroll taxes revoked under FairTax
• Business compensated for collecting tax at “cash register”
• No more tax-related lawyers, lobbyists on company payrolls
No more embedded (hidden) income/payroll taxes in prices
• Reduced costs. Competition - not tax policy - drives prices
• Off-shore “tax haven” headquarters can now return to U.S
No more “favors” from politicians at expense of taxpayers
• Resources go to R&D and study of competition - not taxes
• Marketplace distortions eliminated for fair competition
• US exports increase their share of foreign markets

For the country:
• 7% - 13% economic growth projected in the first year of the FairTax
Jobs return to the U.S.
• Foreign corporations “set up shop” in the U.S.
• Tax system trends are corrected to “enlarge the pie”
• Larger economic “pie,” means thinner tax rate “slices”
• Initial 23% portion of price is pressured downward as “pie” increases
No more “closed door” tax deals by politicians and business
• FairTax sets new global standard. Other countries will follow

Passionately supporting FairTax, Huckabee understands that, if elected President, Congress will have to present the bill for his signature.  His call to action goes beyond his candidacy: Main Street will have to demand that their legislators deliver the bill.

I agree with the difficulty of Huckabee’s position on smoking bans, but regarding his tax increases, those were ordered by a court.  It was either that or be prosecuted for contempt.

First I’ve heard of that.

Now we’ve got judges setting the tax rates?  Doesn’t seem like a very good situation to me.

One thing that’s interesting is that his tax cuts were income taxes; his increases (at least the ones not ordered by a court) were in consumption (not TB, ha ha) taxes like sales and gas taxes.

In other words, his record in Arkansas is perfectly consistent, IMO, with his goal of a fair tax based on consumption.

A legislature should not cooperate when courts assume legislative power.  They should vote to censure the court for ordering them to do something that is within their purview.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

Well that certainly puts Huckabee’s tax hikes into some level of perspective.  But he still, clearly, doesn’t grasp the appropriate roll for government.

If he can’t stand up to an out of control judiciary, how can we expect him to stand up to Putin or the Chinese, or the Islamofascists?

Well, if you want to talk about a candidate who stands up to the judiciary, who do you talk about?  Certainly not Mitt Romney, who signed a gay marriage bill in Massachusetts.  Come on; which one has actually sponsored impeachment papers to rid the high court of those who wrote Roe?

Maybe Ron Paul.  I can’t think of any others.

Why so defensive of Huckabee, Robert?

I haven’t commented on this thread, Rob.  But for the record, I think the so-called “Fair Tax” is a terrible idea.  The real solution to the tax problem is to drastically cut govt spending.

Umm, bit late for that isn’t it?

But I’m no fan of Romney either.

Yup, one and the same; I’m just trying to keep a little quieter profile to separate personal and professional lives.  No worries.

But at any rate, it’s not trying to defend a particular candidate as much as it is a question of basic fairness.  It simply isn’t right to accuse someone of being a tax raiser, when he was only the executive carrying out a court order that he had no power to overturn.

Can y’all think of any way he could have avoided doing this without going to jail?  There was no federal issue, so he couldn’t appeal it to federal courts.  Even if he’d unseated a justice or two, the decision would still stand.

So whaddaya say?  Is he guilty because a bunch of guys appointed by Democrats came up with a loopy interpretation of the law?  Let’s adhere to some basic fairness here, fellas.
