Dean Loses All Touch With Reality, Claims Bush Is “Worse Than Nixon”

Does this sort of nuttiness from Dean surprise anybody any more?

Howard Dean raised the specter of Richard Nixon Friday, calling the Bush White House “more corrupt” than Nixon’s with even more dire consequences for the nation.

“When Richard Nixon mislead the nation and obstructed justice he was harming the system of justice and the respect for the presidency,” the Democratic National Committee chairman said. “But this administration has done more than that. They have leaked military secrets in a time of war in order to fulfill their political agenda.”

Dean said Bush was “not truthful” about the extent of his knowledge about the levee damage in New Orleans in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He also said Bush had much closer ties with fallen lobbyist Jack Abramoff than he has acknowledged and ignored intelligence warnings in the months leading up to the 2003 invasion into Iraq.

“This is not about a third rate burglary of the Watergate. This is about undermining the security of America and it is about misleading the American people,” Dean said in remarks to the New England Press Association.

Kerry was pushing this same line in an email he sent out earlier today. Obviously the Democrats have decided on their talking point for the next couple of weeks.

Dean claims that Bush is worse than Nixon because Bush "leaked military secrets in a time of war." But what "military secrets" did Bush leak? Parts of National Intelligence Estimate reports? Please. Parts of those reports are routinely made public, and if our chief executive deems that a part of any one of those reports should be made public then that is, by all means, his decision to make as commander-in-chief.

And criticing the President over levee damage in New Orleans is just plain silly. It is not the President's fault that the levees were poorly constructed. It is not the President's fault that many in New Orleans chose to ride out the storm at home rather than feel the city. It is not the President's fault that New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco failed in their duties as leaders to protect and help their constituents.

As I've said before: First response to natural disasters is not the President's responsibility.

Dean's criticism of Bush over Abramoff is actually something I agree with. Bush needs to do more to address his connections with Abramoff because right now there are some pretty big questions that need answered. But that's the problem with today's Democrat party. They're not always wrong, but finding the times when they're right, when they make legitimate and honest criticism of the President and Republicans, is hard when you have to sort through reams of dishonest rhetoric from the likes of Howard Dean and John Kerry.
