The real question is: Why do people think they can treat their children as though they were accessories to be customized?

And the answer is: Abortion culture.

Deaf campaigners claim that, although the vast majority of deaf parents would want a child who had normal hearing, some might prefer to create a child who was also deaf and so better able to fit in with their family.

That’s pretty disgusting to think that people would believe that a child they brought into this world and raised wouldn’t fit in with them because they had one difference.  If you can’t raise a child and accept them for who they are, you just shouldn’t be having them.

If your child is born deaf, that’s great. Love your child despite their handicaps. But don’t purposefully make your child deaf to suit your own selfish ends. How disgusting.

No different than parents who deliberately make their child sick.

robert108 is completely right in his Brave New World comment.  These parents are extremely selfish.  They obviously do not the best interest of the child in mind.  They are only concerned with what will make it easier for them.

I thought parents loved their children unconditionally and that they wanted the very best for their children.  I konw my parents have always hoped that I will be even better off than they are.  For a couple to hope that their child is deaf is pathetic and should make them unfit to be parents.

A political party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency, or simply to swell its numbers.

A couple of things:

One, the whole issue has been misrepresented by the media, and hence the uninformed commentary from people. Go to http://www.stopeugenics.org, for what Deaf people actually think and what they are actually responding to, before passing judgement!

Two, if parents loved their children unconditionally, then they should be able to deal with having a Deaf child, without the need for eradicating the so called Deaf gene.

Three, do not pass judgement on Deafness, unless you actually know what it is and how it affects ones life.

Lastly, the very fact that parents would choose to not have a baby with the deaf gene, flies in the face of the idea of conditional love!

The parents would deprive their child of the beauty of music.

Reason alone to outlaw this odious practice.

I am all for genetic engineering.

I support freaks.

Yeah, right, the deprivation of music explains an awful lot! Thanx I needed that educatory highlight!

But they can not make their children Christian Scientists, Christians, Catholics or any other religion.
