Daschle’s Tax Problems Worse Than First Reported

In addition to the services of a car and driver that former Tom Daschle failed to report as income, is an $83, 333 consulting fee from 2007 that just must have slipped his mind! (Or maybe Timothy Geithner was his tax advisor?)

ABC News has obtained the Senate Finance Committee Report on Tom Daschle’s nomination to be Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, which indicates that Daschle’s tax problems were even more substantial than earlier reported.
The report indicates that Daschle’s failure to pay more than $101,000 taxes on the car and driver a wealthy friend let him use from 2005 through 2007 is not the only tax issue the former Senate Majority Leader has been dealing with since his December nomination prompted a more thorough examination of his income tax returns.
Mr. Daschle also didn’t report $83,333 in consulting income in 2007.

And remember those private jets that marked auto execs as unfeeling, uncaring wasteful jerks? Guess who may not have reported his own private jet jaunts as income?

…The Finance Committee staff still is reviewing whether travel and entertainment services provided Tom and Linda Daschle by EduCap, Inc., Catherine B. Reynolds Foundation, Academy Achievement, and Loan to Learn should be reported as income. Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal reported that Daschle made use of the jet belonging to EduCap, a non-profit student loan organization.

It may be that Obama’s plan to rescue the country from financial misconduct is to gather all the miscreants in one place where he can keep his eye on them! Heh.

A Citizen. I agree with your definition. Avoid the mud puddle. Avoid bad people. Avoid late payments by paying one’s bills on time. Avoid dangerous situations by choosing to associate with those who do not engage in dangerous behavior. Simple when you think about it.

Evade is good if one needs to evade the enemy on the battlefield when shot down.

    Evading taxes might be illegal.

I can read and once used the 5-year tax averaging method that resulted in owing less than if I did not use the legal method.

    What would you call that?

I once called the police chief of the town where I taught to inform him that a 30 year old local man was carrying on a relationship with a 6th grade girl. The girl’s mother (who I assume to be on drugs) seemingly approved of her daughters 30+ year old boyfriend.

As usual you have it ass backwards, we’re practicing CRASS warfare.
We think it’s crass for liberal elites, who demand the working class show their patriotism by paying taxes, to then operate under the notion that they don’t have to.

I am wondering—is there some kind of code on the tax returns of congressmembers? A code that tells the IRS that this return is “O.K.” no matter what is inside–just pass it through? Maybe I can find what it is–won’t I be lucky? No taxes due for the year 2008–plus I will get my Obama tax rebate–and the stimulation bonus. Life is good!
Perhaps I should file two tax returns and double my money!

  • Bat One

Admittedly its difficult to look inside another person’s mind and read their intent (but then, Democrats have been blithely doing so where President Bush and members of his administration were concerned for 8 years straight!).

Still, reports now indicate that Daschle only acknowledged his debt of $128,000 back taxes and $12,000 in interest after it had been agreed that he would serve in the Obama cabinet. In other words, Daschle knew about the back taxes well before, ad the only rational conclusion is that he had no intention of paying up what he owed on his own volition, until it became clear that his unpaid taxes would be a public embarrassment for him and for Obama. He never intended to pay his taxes until he was asked to serve in the cabinet.

It is becoming more and more apparent that prominent Democrats, the so-called “leaders” of their party, have a very different, very disdainful view of the rules that the rest of society is expected to live by.

eneils Bailey. Thanks for the discussion opening. I taught grades 5 through 9.

I could tell many similar stories, but certain people would not “get it”.

On a positive note, one woman I car pooled with put her four children through college and taught them Christian values while owning one old car and a cinder block house.

She was the exception. We finally made good friends after about 15 years. She refused to work for the corrupt School District #1 in Columbia, SC because the man she interviewed for asked her for $300 under the table and that was back in 1962. She was an example of a woman of integrity. Unlike these corrupt democrats.

  • Wing Chun Geologist

Just like Obama’s Thermostatgate, the issue here is Hypocrisy. Tom Daschle wants everyone to pay more in taxes. He wants the “rich” to pay their “fair share,” and “fair share” is whatever the Democrats say it is. But when it comes time to make his “contribution” he hides income from the government.

  • http://magyartruth.blogspot.com/ Chief RZ

Smart people, in my book who lie, cheat and steal are not smart. They are dirty criminals.

Certain people continually try to create unusual definitions of common words such as IS.

Honest people pay their taxes, support those who refuse to work and are generally happy because they worked for a living. They give their honest values to their children. We enjoy life because it is ours, we worked for it, earned it, defended freedoms here and abroad and still contribute time, money and love to those who do not have it.

Personally, I just filed my income taxes and noted that I contributed over 500 hours to the South Carolina State Guard that prepares for disasters such as Earthquakes, floods, hurricanes and other natural disasters.

We donate the blood that others take for granted. All we ask is that those “others” leave our homes, families, and property alone.

Tax averaging is legal. The IRS lets you do it. You didn’t “evade” paying your taxes, you legally “avoided ” paying more than you might have. Bottom line, you paid, you didn’t commit tax “evasion.”

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/entry/america_is_back/#c397018 DINO

Why does it surprise you after 30 years of putting the wealthy on a higher plane than the rest of us, 30 years of anti-tax rhetoric, 30 years of openly promoting the idea of avoiding taxation, that wealthy people of ALL kinds would take advantage of the paradigm created by conservatism?

It’s why Clinton sold out. Why reagan sold out, why everyone sells out. We’ve removed shame from the system. It’s not a bad thing to skip out on your bills or do anything for a buck. In fact, it’s what the smart people do. That’s the world you people have created.

  • http://www.willisms.com/ Zsa Zsa

Seeing how Tom Daschel is a Democrat it won’t matter how deep they dig. Democrats get by with that sort of thing. As long as they vote for more Taxes they don’t have to pay them. At least that is how it appears. Accountability? Thy name is NOT Democrat!

  • Kidtransport

Hey folks, now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country. Personally call or write your senators and tell them what you think of tax evaders serving as cabinet members in a “corruption busting” administration. That will do a lot more than writing endlessly here on the blog. I keep a file of all the form letters I get back from my legislators regarding different issues. You never know when it could come in handy to have their positions attached to a signature.

LoadTheMule. About 29+ years. I taught 400+ a year, then later split semesters. 400X29=about 10,000. I taught Health and Physical Education.
