Daschle Withdraws Nomination For Secretary Of Health

Hope and change!

(CNN) — Former Sen. Tom Daschle has withdrawn his nomination to head the Department of Health and Human Services, according to a statement Tuesday from the White House.
Daschle had been fighting to save his nomination as HHS secretary following controversy over his tax records and questions over his work in a field that some consider lobbying.
In a statement announcing his withdrawal, Daschle said it was an honor to be chosen to lead the reform of America’s health care system.
“But if 30 years of exposure to the challenges inherent in our system has taught me anything, it has taught me that this work will require a leader who can operate with the full faith of Congress and the American people, and without distraction,” he said.

That makes three Obama appointments down in flames. Richards, Killefer and Daschle with Geithner somehow sneaking into office despite $42,000 in unpaid taxes.
Discussion question: Has any other President lot this many cabinet appointments to scandal and controversy? And if not, can Obama really suggest that he isn’t politics as usual?

He should have been disqualified for his dopey eye wear alone!

“…by and of the most recent…”

    My apologies.

If the man withdrew honestly then he has more sense then Obama.

It is probably for the best that Tom Daschle dropped out. So many of obama’s nominees have had dubious pasts and having another one would have hurt his presidency. However, Tom Daschle would have done a great job reforming our health care system. There was a good reason he was given all of that money for giving those speeches to those health care companies.

Thank you TD for making the right choice, if belatedly.

I suspect the choice was more BO’s than TD’s. These guys don’t jump off the gravy train, they get pushed! The “I withdraw my nomination” is a little more face saving that the Obama: “No way in Hell I take you now” would have been.

Tom Daschle is from South Dakota. He is a midwesterner. Obama’s vetting team should know that midwesterners don’t like to pay their taxes.

    Change we can believe in!!!

Don’t let the tax man hit you on the way out.

I’m not sure Rob. I doubt it. You’d think we’d have any of Bushes shoved in our faces just about now, if that were the case.

I say good riddance to be honest. His healthcare plans made Hillarycare look libertarian.

Like term limits and a restructuring of pay and benefits (including putting these sleazebags on SS), ALL federal employees should go through a mandatory annual audit of their personal finances and tax returns. This will obviously never happen, for obvious reasons.

So then, if 5 or 6 out of every ten Dem appointees are tax criminals, just imagine the ratsnest they’d open if audits became mandatory…Hmmm?

The difference between Daschle and Geithner? Daschle committed the one unpardonable sin for a democrat. No it wasn’t cheating on taxes. It wasn’t having a boyfriend/live-in prostitute run a brothel out of his house. It wasn’t committing adultery. It wasn’t perjury. Nope. The one unpardonable sin for Democrats? He lost. Under the bus and stay there this time Tom.

Yesterday Tom Daschle was indispensible to solve health care. He alone was the one most uniquely qualified to take this cabinet position.

Today they say, the job of fixing health care is bigger than any one person and we can’t let this get us distracted from the health care crisis.

The difference between then and now is hypocrisy.

I surmise distracted is a new focus group word that will be used a lot today and tomorrow. Let’s watch and listen for it! It’s their shell game to distract from their incompetence. Also I am picking up on another one they may use. “See, see, the tax code is to complicated”, even for these indispensible tax cheats. Funny, my tax accountant and I were able to get it right.

You’re right! Holding him to the same standards as every other American is just down right un-Democratic! Heh.

    Proof,

You know full well that nobody seriously thinks Democrats are democratic.

Let’s see. Last night Obama fully supported Daschle despite his tax problems. Today, after the withdrawl, Obama states that we can not have a double standard, one for his nominees and one for the american people. Only after TD’s withdrawl, then enter the double standard reason??

Daschle’s departure is for the best. A “new” administration that’s been hawking “change” hardly needs any more tax cheats.

Still, I can’t help but think that Daschle was selected for the HHS post not because if his expertise on any health issues, but to unofficially shore-up the hopelessly dilapidated leadership of Senate Democrats.

Just to prove a point, try to recall a significant accomplishment by any of the most half dozen HHS Secretaries. That is, if you can remember who they were in the first place.

I think I’ll ask my tax man to make an innocent mistake this year.

I HOPE this will open the eyes and ears to all Politicians and CHANGE their minds about asking Americans to pay more Taxes. The so called economic stimulus package is a bunch of Pork Filled Garbage. Our economy obviously needs to be CLEANSED of the bad businesses and bad business practices. Bailing them out only prolongs the inevitable. AND throwing in all the PORK is not doing a thing but picking the pockets of the US Tax Payers!

I wish Daschle well and hope he gets his life and finances in order, maybe gains a bit of humility, empathy, and responsibility in him.

Get his life in order?? His life is not in disarray? He merely had a driver for two years that he didn’t realize he had to claim as a form of income.

It might be a sneaky way to disqualify him, but it is certainly not dishonest or any statement about Daschles inability to manage finances.

    How silly.

Yup, real exciting…NOT!! I was hoping that the “change” would have brought new people in with new ideas. But I guess when you know nothing, know no one and haven’t done anything that qualifies you to be in the job, you grasp for straws. This whole thing has gotten real old real fast.
