Dan Rather Still Standing By Forged Documents In Bush National Guard Story
If there is a single moment that launched blogging into national prominence, it was the controversy over Dan Rather’s story about then-President Bush’s service in the Texas Air National Guard. Rather’s story claimed that Bush was AWOL for some of that service, but the documents that claim was based on turned out to be forgeries.
The documents purported to be memos from one of Bush’s superiors at the time, but they included things such superscript which no typewriter at the time was capable of. It turns out that the documents were created in Microsoft Word and artificially aged.
These revelations resulted in the end of Rather’s career. But to this day, Rather maintains that his story was accurate, a claim he repeated on today’s Good Morning America:
“There’s no way to ever really know the truth,” says Rather, which sounds like a cop out to me.Tags: Asshats, dan rather, media bias, rathergate
