Dakota Talk Radio: Listen Live At 7:00pm Central

Tonight is the North Dakota Governor’s Race night on Dakota Talk.  Click here to listen live (link will appear at 7:00pm central time).  The call-in number is (347) 677-0693.

First up, we’re going to have Ryan Cunningham who works in the radio industry in southeastern North Dakota.  Ryan is a Republican who heard me talking on Scott Hennen’s radio show about the need for a conservative primary challenge for Governor Hoeven who has made clear his intentions to run for a third term in office.  After hearing that, Ryan decided it was time for him to step up and issue that challenge.

After that, we’ll have Democrat North Dakota State Senator Tim Mathern on to talk about his possible bid for the Governor’s office, as well as the SCHIP issue and the controversy surrounding the possible expansion of the state penitentiary.

Seems like you are working mighty hard to ensure a nut job like Mathern gets elected.

So now criticism of Hoeven = support for Mathern?

Not likely.  If Hoeven would start governing like a conservative people like me wouldn’t have any criticism of him.

The war against illegal plunder has been fought since the beginning of the world. But how is… legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish this law without delay … If such a law is not abolished immediately it will spread, multiply and develop into a system.

Thanks Matt, I think it went well.

I was happy to have both these guys on.  Cunningham was great, and while Sen. Mathern and I agree on almost nothing, he is a gentleman and very worth talking to.

Cunningham sounds like a really good speaker - he has some great ideas as well.

I’ll be honest, some of the things he said left me a little cold.  Like more funding for social services?  I think Human Services is one of the most over-funded agencies in the state.  Plus, the goal of social services should be to reduce government dependency...yet it seems like we’re constantly throwing more money at it.

I also didn’t like some of the things he said about giving the state more control over education.  I think we need to maintain local control as much as possible.  He also said nice things about No Child Left Behind, which was a total abandonment of federalist or “local control” principles.

But would he be a net improvement over Hoeven?  I still think so.

I missed the part about Human Services - I don’t think that any state agency is in need of more funding. At least he realizes we have a tax problem.

Yes, he does realize that.

And you’re right about state agencies.  Nearly very one of them got a big increase in funding over even what they requested from the government in the last session.

We need less spending, not more.

What do you think incessant bashing of our incumbent GOP governor does? Of course it helps the Dems.

There is a big difference between disagreeing and advocating defeat. Your site and blogs cross that line regularly. Of course, conservative Republicans have a long history of eating our own.

By the way, the vast majority of Republicans and North Dakotans are not ultra conservatives. They are right of center and that is why Hoeven enjoys the popularity he does. He is conservative, but practical in funding priorities like education and tax cuts. It called balance and not being blindly driven by ideology.

Of course standing on the outside throwing rocks does not require you to stand with the consequences of your actions and opinions.

George, I’m more concerned with what is right then simply seeing the GOP win elections.  I’m not trying to help Democrats.  I would hate it if Mathern got elected, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to help Hoeven.

Among other problems with Hoeven, spending $6,000+ in tax dollars to “create” a job isn’t exactly very smart.

I’m not going anywhere.  You can gripe at me about not being a loyal Republican, but I’ll still be here telling the truth as I see it and tens of thousands of people will keep right on reading.  Hoeven and people like you can either acknowledge it, or keep pretending like it isn’t happening.

Conservatives don’t “fund” tax cuts.  Conservatives cut taxes knowing that revenues will go up.

If a Republican talks about “affording tax cuts” or “funding tax cuts” or “paying for tax cuts” they are ignorant of economics and likely not a conservative.

gs: The term “ultraconservative” is verbal delusion; one is either conservative or something else.  There are no gradations or factions, much as the lefties would like to create so they can divide us.

I think anyone who is worried about our talking about Cunningham giving victory to Mathern needs to take another look at this election. Last November, Hoeven was had an 86 percent approval rating. We do not need to worry about losing the office to the Democrats.
