Da Vinci Code Movie To Be Toned Down

Well, looks like The DaVinci Code movie will suck.

The film version of The Da Vinci Code is attempting to reduce the offence that the best-selling book caused to Roman Catholics.

Sony Pictures, the studio behind the film starring Tom Hanks and Sir Ian McKellen, is reported to have been so concerned that it has consulted Catholic and other Christian specialists on how it might alter the plot of the novel to avoid offending the devout.

The best thing about the novel was that it told a stort that flies in the face of conventional religious dogma. If they take that out, what's left? A good chase scene?

Well, they’ve got to be careful, otherwise they’ll be called “Christian haters.”

Bill O’Reilly would have a field day!

You guys are thinking about this from a “political” angle, but really, these people are just thinking about the financial aspect of it.  If you come out with a movie perceieved as offenseive to the religion of most Americans, you’re just not going to make any money on the movie…

The book ticked off a lot of Catholics and Christians, but did swimmingly here in the U.S. and abroad.

The book takes the worship of Mary to a whole new level.  One could argue that Catholics are not Christians because they always pray to other dead people, like dead saints and Mary, hundreds and hundreds of prayers to all sorts of dead people other than the Living God.  This book simply takes the worship of Mary to another extreme.

Personally, I thought the book was decent, except for the ending which seemed to unravel too quickly as if the author had to hurry up and finish because he had better things to do.

Catholics should not find offense at the book or the upcoming movie.  It draws even more attention away from God and Christ, which is what Catholics seem to be very good at.

I read the book when it was first released, I was not really impressed. Salmon Rushdie’s Satanic Verses was better. Sorry for miss spelling his name, the book is buried in the Stacks, and I ain’t going to dig for it. As for novels

Well the book was sold extremely well with the “offensive” material still in it.  Don’t you think everyone who read the book will go see?  And I’m sure a lot of others will go to see it if it gets good reviews.  If anything, the movie-makers risk losing money by taking things out.  Who’s going to want to see a movie that can’t even begin to compare to the famous book its based on?  Hollywood should be doing everything it can to please those of us who’ve read it.

And always remember the golden rule… Controversy Sells!  There’s more people willing to see a movie due to its controversy than there are who are willing to boycott it.  And as JoeBruin88 basically says, who cares what the Catholics think?

You’re right that the book did very well, but books are an entirely different enigma

It takes a helluva lot more money to make a movie than it does to write a book… no producer in the world will risk offending people with a $100 million budget.

If they change the plot, it won’t be the same Da Vinci Code that most people have read. The movie will suck, a lot of people are going to be angry, and the movie will make crap for the movie. So what if there’s controversy? Sony needs to stop worrying about the churches and make the movie. If you let an outside force affect how you make the movie, don’t make it. I have been waiting too long for a good movie to come out. A disappointment like this will just tear me up inside!

They’re not worried about the churches, they’re worried about Fox News and MSNBC.

Why will the movie “suck” if they alter the storyline? It might not be what is in the book, but it could very well be good on its own merits.

Dave, you seem like a pretty smart guy...but every once in a while you toss out something like this and it makes me wonder.

Do you really think that Fox News or any other media outlet that would cover a controversy surrounding the DaVinci Code movie would really care all that much about the content or would they simply be flaming a “scandal” for ratings?

Just like they do with everything else…

And Likwid, the movie would suck in that it wouldn’t adhere to the storyline of the book...which is a pretty dang good story line.

It could be good on its own merits, but the chance is slim in my view.

I don’t understand the question.

I think it’s the former, however; I think Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity would actually dislike and be troubled by the content of a movie like The Davinci Code.
