Cynthia McKinney Punches Out Capitol Police Officer

Goodness...

Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-GA) punched a U.S. Capitol Police officer today after he mistakenly pursued her for failing to pass through a metal detector.

Members are not required to pass through metal detectors and the officer, manning a position at Longworth House Office Building, apparently did not recognize McKinney and didn't see her Member pin.

The officer called out "Ma'am, Ma'am," in an attempt to stop her.

When the officer caught up to McKinney, he grabbed her by the arm.

McKinney pulled her arm away, swung around, cell phone in hand, and punched the officer square in the chest, according to the witness.

Officer was just doing his job. Of course, as Ms. Zanotti points out, this isn't the first time McKinney has had problems with Capitol Hill Police:

• In 1993, after she complained about being stopped by security guards, Capitol Police posted a photo of her on an office wall so that officers could remember who she was.

• In 1995, McKinney reportedly contacted the sergeant at arms after a white Capitol Police officer asked her to consent to a security check.

• In 1996 and 1998, she complained that White House security officials failed to recognize her and did not give her the same treatment as other members of Congress, at one time mistaking her 23-year-old white aide for the congresswoman.

Bizarre.

Update:

Ed Morrissey:

I just need to make sure we have this correct. The new Democratic effort on national security, therefore, is to defy identification procedures, ignore common-sense safeguards, pretend not to hear warnings, and then assault the people protecting us.

Gee, I don't know ... sounds like the old Democratic program on security to me.

That sounds about right.

Supposedly they are waiting until the session is over. However, I just wouldn’t hold my breath. This could have been averted if she had worn the stupid pin that they are issued and told to wear. Anyone who has ever worked securtiy knows that the guard did what he is hired to do. Will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

He will be fired and sued, that is how it will work out. How dare he think he has authority over his superiors. Uppity honky!

This must stop.  Either we enforce our security or not.  I ran into this problem during my teaching career.  Some students cried race, or sex when confronted with blatant infractions.  Finally, we were blessed with a superior principal, Dr. Steven Rosado.  He was great.  In three weeks, everyone knew that the rules would be enforced regardless (they never were able to paint him into a box).  Unfortunately, he died before the school year ended of Cancer.  A great man, I will never forget him.

We must enforce rules nationally, regardless of race, sex, or any other super-status with the exception of elected officials with proper identification as provided by law.
