Cowardly Blending

A UN official kind of gets it right on the Israeli/Hezbollah conflict.

The U.N. humanitarian chief accused Hezbollah on Monday of “cowardly blending” among Lebanese civilians and causing the deaths of hundreds during two weeks of cross-border violence with Israel.
The militant group has built bunkers and tunnels near the Israeli border to shelter weapons and fighters, and its members easily blend in among civilians.
Jan Egeland spoke with reporters at the Larnaca airport in Cyprus late Monday after a visit to Lebanon on his mission to coordinate an international aid effort. On Sunday he had toured the rubble of Beirut’s southern suburbs, a once-teeming Shiite district where Hezbollah had its headquarters.
During that visit he condemned the killing and wounding of civilians by both sides, and called Israel’s offensive “disproportionate” and “a violation of international humanitarian law.”
On Monday he had strong words for Hezbollah, which crossed into Israel and captured two Israeli soldiers on July 12, triggering fierce fighting from both sides.
“Consistently, from the Hezbollah heartland, my message was that Hezbollah must stop this cowardly blending … among women and children,” he said. “I heard they were proud because they lost very few fighters and that it was the civilians bearing the brunt of this. I don’t think anyone should be proud of having many more children and women dead than armed men.”

What’s sad is that this sort of clear-cut condemnation for Hezbollah and its terror tactics – couched in a double standard for Israel as it may be – is surprising coming from the UN.
Let’s hope we here more along these lines from the UN.
Really, though, I don’t know where this guy gets off criticizing Israel for killing civilians when, by his own admission, it is Hezbollah purposefully putting those civilians in harms way in order to draw out that very sort of criticism.

Mr. Egeland just might be coming down with a touch of epiphany. He is the same one who made a name for himself by criticizing the US relief contribution after the horrific south asian tsunami as “stingy.” Egeland’s boss (Kofi Annan) was on a skiing vacation at the time, as I recall. The US Navy and ship-board US Marines were already on the scene and working 24/7 in the stricken areas before the Secretary General finished his vacation several days later, and relieved his young protege at the microphones.

His Mr. Egeland is now trying his hand at a more balanced approach it can only mean that he, and the UN itself are probably desperate… and Egeland will most likely be elsewhere employed before Christmas.

Actually, I’m expecting “preliminary reports” of Israeli soldiers raping Lebanese girls and committing “cold-blooded murder”…any day now. It’s all in the leftie/terrorist playbook. Oh, yes, and the Israelis should announce their exit strategy. Don’t forget that one. Also, we will be informed that Lebanon is a mess, and the Israelis should pull out as soon as possible.

Charles Johnson has posted both the audio and a partial transcript of an interview with retired Canadian Major General Lewis Mackenzie, regarding emails he had received earlier from the Canadian soldier acting as a UN peacekeeper who was killed in an Israeli strike (accidental?) on that UN observation outpost. Here is the most pertinent part of that interview:

We received emails from him a few days ago, and he was describing the fact that he was taking fire within, in one case, three meters of his position for tactical necessity, not being targeted. Now that’s veiled speech in the military. What he was telling us was Hezbollah soldiers were all over his position and the IDF were targeting them. And that’s a favorite trick by people who don’t have representation in the UN. They use the UN as shields knowing that they can’t be punished for it.

So, the bad guys are using the UN peacekeepers for cover, the UN knows all about it but does nothing, and when someone gets killed because of it, its the Israelis’ fault.

    Right!?
