Earlier this year Senator Kent Conrad, Senator Chris Dodd and their apologists tried to claim that the Countrywide VIP loan scandal was over. The Senate Ethics Committee, without releasing their reasoning or any of the exculpatory evidence they considered, claimed that Conrad and Dodd had done no wrong other than generating an appearance of impropriety.
Unfortunately for Conrad and Dodd and all their supporters both in and out of the media, House Republicans aren’t letting this go. Representative Darrel Issa (R – CA) has been pursuing subpoeans for records from Countrywide pertaining to these VIP (some of which have already been destroyed) that the Senate Ethics Committee didn’t even bother to request.

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives plan to push for a formal vote to have a congressional committee subpoena documents from the former Countrywide Financial Corp. dealing with a VIP mortgage loan program.
Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., plans to request the vote on Thursday at a meeting of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, according to a spokesman. Panel Democrats have so far opposed holding a committee vote to formally subpoena the documents from Bank of America Corp. (BAC), which acquired Countrywide last year.

Naturally, Democrats are resisting this, but if there’s nothing to hide then what’s the worry?
Senator Conrad himself has written in editorials published in the North Dakota media that he planned on being completely transparent with the public about this issue and would cooperate with investigators fully. So why isn’t Conrad cooperating? Why isn’t joining Issa in calling for the release of these records? After all, if he did no wrong, they will further exonerate him and remove all doubt of wrong-doing, no?
Conrad isn’t doing that because, in my estimation, he’s guilty as sin and just want this to go away.
