Couldn’t Be the Minimum Wage

Teen unemployment up!

The increase in the unemployment rate to 5.7 percent, from 5.5 percent in June, in part came as many young people streamed into the labor market looking for summer jobs. This year, fewer of them were able to find work, the government said. The unemployment rate for teenagers jumped to 20.3 percent, the highest since late 1992.

Congress has increased the minimum wage from $5.15 to $6.55 an hour in a years time.  That’s an increase of 27%.

Now ask yourself, if the price of arugula jumps up 27% are you going to try to do without it, if you can?  Of course you are.

I find it interesting that the article notes that the unemployment rate for teenagers was the highest since late 1992....right after George H. W. Bush and the Democrat congress raised it.

Teenage unemployment is also caused by invaders taking the entry-level jobs.

The only legitimate role of government with regard to economics is to prevent fraud and provide a remedy- civil and criminal penalties- in case of fraud.

People have the mistaken notion that the free market has no rules.  But it most certainly does.  All our problems are due to government meddling.

Well I don’t see that problem as getting worse.

But it is part of the underlying unemployment problem.  Why teens and minorities have problems getting jobs.

Of course in many cases this is brought upon by their own decisions.  Where they live, attitudes, education etc.

[W]hat you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I think that raising the minimum wage raises the incentive to use illegal, under-the-table labor mostly provided by illegal immigrants.

You must not live in a border State.

I do in fact live in a border state.

We don’t seem to have many Canadians flocking in here as far as I can tell.  You can pick them out of a crowd because they talk funny.

Actually I hadn’t thought the problem was getting worse within the last year.  (But I could be wrong.)

Well, where I live in Southern California, we don’t have a problem with Canadians, either; it’s the other ones.  Despite all the window dressing about enforcing border enforcement, I see no impact in my area.  In my town, we have a street that is known locally as “the Rio Grande”, since it’s signs in English on one side of the street, and Spanish on the other side.

You must not live in a border State.

You don’t have to live in a Mexican border town to see it happening.
Our min. wage in Washington is $8.07 and this is a huge incentive to use under-the-table labor of illegal immigrants.

Some people are unable to produce $6.55 an hour plus payroll taxes, worth of work.
What happens to them?

Kevin on August 1, 2008 at 09:43 am

The bad thing is many of them learn job skills in that first job.  They soon are worth more.

But if they don’t get that first job their productivity will never be worth what employers would have to pay.

A permanent underclass benefits the Democrat party.

What happens to them?

If they just sit around and wait for something to “happen” to them, not much.  If they use that experience to improve their situation, the sky’s the limit.  Despite all the socialist inroads by the Dems, we are still a meritocracy.

The way a dictator gets a budget passed is by lowering state workers salaries to the minimum wage.

The way a dictator gets a budget passed…

Bullshit!  California has a big Dem majority in the legislature.

It’s just a stunt; tax payers in the private sector are still screwed!

He cut the pay for people who weren’t doing their job? How horrible!

maybe the rise in teenage unemployment is due to companies not hiring.
