Cops Upset About iPhone Application Allowing Drivers To Bypass Their Revenue Traps

I love the sanctimonious outrage about “saving lives.” As if traffic cameras and speed traps were really about public safety and not revenue.

Area drivers looking to outwit police speed traps and traffic cameras are using an iPhone application and other global positioning system devices that pinpoint the location of the cameras.
That has irked D.C. police chief Cathy Lanier, who promised her officers would pick up their game to counteract the devices, which can also help drivers dodge sobriety checkpoints.
“I think that’s the whole point of this program,” she told The Examiner. “It’s designed to circumvent law enforcement — law enforcement that is designed specifically to save lives.”

If the bureaucrats were at all honest when they say that they’re concerned about safety and not revenue they’d like this technological innovation. When people are alerted that they’re near a speed trap or traffic camera they should be prompted to slow down. Which means they’re slowing down in areas officials have obviously targeted for extra traffic/speed control (thus the traffic cameras/speed traps).
The problem is that they’re not really concerned with safety. They’re concerned with revenue.

Yeah this time I will be on the side of the cops. All those cameras are made for our own safety. And if there are some applications nowadays, in this case on well known iPhone – it is the highest level of stupidity. I mean, all those things are made for our safety, but we can’t realize it and we keep breaking rules.. Even with those applications.. I think those applications should be prohibited but I don’t know how.. Thanks for the interesting article though. I will be waiting for another great ones from you.

    Sincerely,

    Mark Tripson from iphone development

ha-ha! Geeks united with their iphones. Too funny

its about slowing down and keeping people safe, right? these software add ons ensure that people WILL slow down at those areas.

(yes, i know its also… some say ONLY…. about revenue and that makes me sick)

Get yourself a ACTIVE radar jammer. It sends radar out to jam police units. It may not be legal but it works GREAT! :]

DC police do not care about safety, only about stealing people’s money.

What’s new about schemes to avoid police traffic measures? Before we had the current technology, we had blink-your-headlights and CB radios.

“had”? What you talkin’ ’bout, Willis!!

But if they are not ripping off the little guy how else can the DC officials afford their Crack? Marion has a big habit and no telling how big obummer’s is.

Revenue generating or not, it is obvious there are those who are the collective of defiant, selfish, narcissistic, reckless, and dangerous individuals amongst us and thus mandatory controls are enforced. It’s not much of a stretch to allege many of those are the ones who employ such technology to circumvent law enforcement – the better to endanger the rest of us. There should be a photo-cop at every intersection, fines of $250-$500 for the first offense, $1,000 plus four points plus a day in jail for the second offense, and 2 year license suspension and 60 days on the third offense, for each and every inconsiderate jerk caught traversing our roads with reckless indifference to others. Its about time someone forced the selfish in our midsts to account for their actions.

The statistics of auto accidents prove you to be wrong, Dean. Period. Or, are you calling the Dept Transportation and NTSB liars?

    Selfish?

Here’s something: Prove that traffic cameras are improving traffic safety.

    You can’t, because they aren’t.

That's what I call mobile software development serving to public safety. Here's the point: I'd rather drivers have an app that warns about speed cameras and DO slow down in could-be-unsafe places. Doesn't matter for what sake they will do it – for safety's sake or for the sake of not being penalized for speeding. If this prevents from car accidents and pedestrian accidents, I'm for that.

Very well said..With the help of these GPS apps generally slow down in the area where cameras are placed. And as far as i think these cameras are placed in the accident prone zone. So obviosly these apps are helpful so more safer driving. Thanks for sharing.
