Congress Considers Bill To Ban Junk Food In Schools

Because we all know the best way to teach kids to resist the urge of poor food choices is to ban the ban food they’d choose.  See, if the federal government makes the choice for them, they don’t even have to think about it!

I’m sure this is the sort of thing the founders envisioned when they wrote the Constitution.  Actually, sarcasm aside, the founders didn’t even intend for the federal government to have a role in education at all, let alone dictating what sort of food is available in what are supposedly state-run schools.  But this is the danger we face when we allow our states to become dependent on the federal government for funding.  See, Congress can’t outright order state schools to ban certain types of food.  That branch of our government simply isn’t afforded that power by the Constitution.  But since our state schools have become dependent on federal funding they can threaten to remove that funding if state schools don’t comply with their wishes.

Meaning, in a lot of ways, our locally-elected school boards, municipal leaders and state leaders aren’t setting policy in our schools so much as the Senators and Representatives in far-away Washington DC are.

As is usually the case with these absurd government power grabs, it’s attached as an amendment to the totally unrelated farm bill.  Because the people behind it know it’d never pass were it a bill of its own, they they have to sneak it through.

Junk food is not the reason kids are fat.

Junk food is not the reason kids are fat.

Who decides what “junk food” is, and who decides what “fat” is?  If it’s the parents, fine; if it’s some govt bureaucrat, no way.

Hell… why not!!??  With Bush/Kennedy’s No Child Left Behind, the Feds have already all but banned real learning in the nation’s schools. After that coup, whats a few frickin’ twinkies?

Wow, I can’t believe you disagree with this.

Don’t we need these children fit to fight in your wars?

We could be in Iraq for 50 years and we will need them fit for that, right?

Then Iran, Venezuela, Syria and then someone after that.

Kids are fat because they do not have anywhere near the level of physical activity needed to burn off the amounts of food, of all kinds, that they eat. So why are kids not physically active? That is the root question. And banning types of foods will insure that that is exactly the types of food kids WILL eat. Ever hear of a little thing called prohibition? That was oh, so successful in ending the consumption of alcohol. Right? Tell kids not to do something and you are guarandamnteed to get that activity in spades.

Should we call them the electric generation?

Video games, television, cookies, soda and moo juice. Making it to the next level is more important to some of them then a sunny day. It’s not so much what they consume it’s the lack of exercise. I think making the “chubby ones” run a few laps will get better results. But that is way to abusive right? smile

I think that exercise will change there minds and there eating habits.

Please tell me how this is a federal issue? Under what Constitutional Provision or twisted logic can the federal government pass laws on what children may eat in our public schools?

It is because the Congress federalized education with the NEA Department of Education and public schools apply for and receive federal money, money taken from the states in taxes that we pay and they then redistribute this money back to every state as a back door means of their controlling the minds of our children and assuming state, local and most importantly parental rights because they sent our money back to us.

I used to argue that marijuana should be controlled by the federal government because transport and sale can cross state lines, using federally built and maintained interstate highways; but while I still oppose the legalization of marijuana anywhere, I can see now how the federal government will use any issue, any issue at all, as a means to control our actions and thereby absent a Constitutional Amendment to turn America into a Socialist State.

We, the citizens of America are rapidly losing our rights and unless we take thyem back very soon, we will wake up one day to realize we have lost all our rights to a political ruling elite (Democrats).

"Guest” - Wow, I can’t believe you disagree with this.

That’s your problem. You think that you know our positions when the reality is that you haven’t the faintest clue. You then spend a good bit of your time arguing against a figment of your imagination.

damp is correct. March their rotund asses outside and make them play tag and dodge ball and do windsprints. If only for a 1/2 hour per day.
