Common Sense Commentary: “Take Back Washigton” Rally Was The Buzz Of CPAC

Last week, your Chairman joined over 10,000 great Americans for the 37th annual showcase of the heart and soul of American conservatism known as CPAC. And let me tell you what: the conservative movement in this country is not only alive and well…it’s energized and ready to effect change. Riding high on the momentum ushered in by tea parties across the country—including our own Take Back Washington Rally that stole all the buzz during the convention— conservatives are ready to take this country back. One of the priorities topping the list? Force lawmakers to revisit their Constitutional responsibilities.
How would you feel about committing policymakers to the ideas of the American founding? Do you think that could steer us back in the right direction? Introducing the Mount Vernon Statement: a new dedication to an old idea. Its predecessor, the “Sharon Statement”, was issued about 50 years ago. Concerned about war with the Soviet Union—plus the subversive genesis of a counter-cultural revolution about to be unleashed—conservatives gathered together in 1960 to establish basic leadership precepts that could guide their decisions and define them politically. It was that philosophical framework, so firmly entrenched in the Constitution, which heralded the rise of 1964 Republican presidential nominee Barry Goldwater and, eventually, a guy by the name of Ronald Reagan.
Fast-forward to today. The Obama administration is expanding the Fed at a rate we haven’t seen since FDR. Meanwhile, the economy stagnates while employers fret about the next wave of punitive taxes or restrictive measures soon to be leveled at their respective industries. With this brutal anti-business climate, is there any wonder why businesses aren’t hiring? And is there is any question that new a recommitment to the Constitution is desperately needed? That’s why a coalition of conservative experts on fiscal, social, cultural and national security issues came together to pen this important document. Already, over 80 leaders, representing tens of millions of conservative activists nationwide, have signed The Mount Vernon Statement. It’s a blueprint for success because it acknowledges what works: the timeless principles laid out by our Founders.
That’s my opinion. What’s yours?

This is quite commonly asserted in recent weeks, mostly do to Tea Party supporters and in the fallout from the recent GOP victories. My question is who exactly is taking it back and what do they intend to do with it if they wrestle control back from the Democrats and liberal Republicans? The recent decade, or more really, with GOP Congressional control indicates that there would not be a great deal of difference between now and after the takeover. They are professional politicians without much difference between the two parties.

If the conservatives takeover, which I doubt will happen, what will the difference be? It is clear that the options are highly limited, as any real change would have to call on great sacrifices by all the American people and that only reinforces the cold-hearted reputation of conservatives, their lack of compassion for those in need, and it is my guess the people would not tolerate much in the way of sacrifices and would swiftly throw out the conservatives.

We do not have any national leader for the GOP or Conservative Movement that possesses the charisma, communication skills, the credentials and lack of ghosts in their closet to even sell modest belt-tightening sacrifices to the American people and gutless politicians in both parties will never risk their own political careers to lead the way and suffer the attacks that will follow.

Sorry Mr. Hennen, I do not think “Take Back Washington” means very much and could in the wrong hands spell disaster for the conservative movement and America; and right now I cannot point to any leader in the GOP or elsewhere that can lead the way. Oh, I should add this point that you will absolutely hate: If they take back Washington and do not reverse the negative direction of the social, moral and spiritual issues, they will lose a great deal of Conservative Christian support and may never get it back. I should add that it is not only conservatives that care about those family value issues.

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but mark me down less than enthused!

Great commentary, Nieman. I mean that.

It’s my belief and fervent hope that conservatives get this country back and soon. The changes they will make will drive the people further into desperation and the conservatives will finally get the Stalinist treatment they deserve. It is disappointing that this certain path to crushing the conservatives for generations was short-circuited by the elections of 2006 and 2008.

I mean that from the bottom of my hate-filled heart.
