Cold War, Global Warming, and Our Schools

Ever wonder why American school kids are so hopelessly ignorant of economics and finance? Or why they know so little about American history and the truly unique entity that is the United States?
Curious about what American students actually DO all day, since they clearly aren’t learning much about “readin’, writin’, and ‘rithmetic”?
Well, now you know.

Reading, writing and . . . global warming?
A Silicon Valley lawmaker is gaining momentum with a bill that would require “climate change” to be among the science topics that all California public school students are taught.
The measure, by state Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, also would mandate that future science textbooks approved for California public schools include climate change.
“You can’t have a science curriculum that is relevant and current if it doesn’t deal with the science behind climate change,” Simitian said. “This is a phenomenon of global importance and our kids ought to understand the science behind that phenomenon.”
The state Senate approved the bill, SB 908, Jan. 30 by a 26-13 vote. It heads now to the state Assembly. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has taken numerous actions to reduce global warming, but he has yet to weigh in on Simitian’s bill. Other Republicans in the Capitol, however, are not happy about the proposal.
Some say the science on global warming isn’t clear, while others worry the bill would inject environmental propaganda into classrooms.

Anyone who has guided a child or children through the politically correct iceflow that is our primary education system over the past 20 years knows full well that the interconnect between PTA, teachers unions and the leftist tilt of our schools’ curricula is no accident, and that it is merely the tip of a large and ominous floating glacier.
Individualism, independence, and self-reliance are frowned upon in the classrooms and glossed over or ignored in the curriculum. Social promotion, Outcomes Based Education, and Zero Tolerance policies just prove the point. Group identity and group think are encouraged and rewarded both socially and academically. This move to translate the “science” of global warming into academic gospel is just the latest move in a long campaign of socializing America. Senator Obama’s UN tax bill, mentioned elsewhere, is yet another.
Like a number of the world’s martial arts, the writings of Lenin and Chairman Mao are replete with exhortations to use the enemy’s strength against him. Our education system is being used in exactly that manner.
The West won the Cold War, militarily and economically at least, when the Soviet Union imploded under the weight of its own dogmatic sloth and inefficiency. But in the arena of ideas and ideology, the struggle continues unabated.

Why to conservatives fear and hate science so much? After all, most of you want to replace the entire science curriculum with the book of genesis!

  • Bat One

    Jack,

Your attempts at relevance really are pitiful to watch.

First, I defy you to identify one comment by one commenter here suggesting the replacement of the science curriculum as you’ve stated. Just one!

So much of your silly “Most of you…” bullshit.

Second, of course, conservatives do not “fear and hate” science at all. What we object to is those political hacks who bray on unconscionably about “diversity” and “tolerance” but then go out of their way to choke off any sort of opposing points of view, and who solemnly insist on using junk science as rationale for their elitist grabs at the liberty of others (Started to sound familiar yet,Jack!?)

Third is the whole question of you (or any other leftwing liberal) questioning someone else’s acceptance of science. After all, look at the abysmal miasma you guys have made of the science of economics, instituting all manner of foolish make-believe in order to justify those same elitist grabs at the liberty of others mentioned above.

Finally, not to put too sharp a point on your bumbling ineptitude, there’s the grammatical slight. You are certainly free to disparage the religious teaching of anyone you choose, safely hidden behind a cable and a screen name, though its doubtful you had anything to do with protecting and perpetuating that freedom. Still, the Book of Genesis is a formal title, your irreligious contempt aside, and it ought to be capitalized as such… even by a troll like you.

    laydownsally,

    Truer words seldom spoken:

The banning of DDT was and is one of the great crimes perpetrated on humankind by the enviornmental scientists.

But then again those deaths don’t seem to matter much the the greens, since they were mostly in Asia and Africa.

Why do liberals fear and hate scientific debate so much? After all, science is not infallible, so why are the “global warming is man-made” advocates so intent on shutting down debate?

To some extent this story is overblown. The bill in question would essentially add 2 words to Section 33541 of the Education Code:

33541. (a) The State Board of Education
state board and the department shall revise, as necessary, the framework in science to include the necessary elements to teach environmental education, including, but not limited to, all of the following topics:
    (1) Integrated waste management.
    (2) Energy conservation.
    (3) Water conservation and pollution prevention.
    (4) Air resources.
    (5) Integrated pest management.
    (6) Toxic materials.
    (7) Wildlife conservation and forestry.
    (8) Climate change.

This section of the Education Code does not, in any way, mandate HOW those topics should be taught, only THAT they be taught. The HOW is handled by other agencies.

That said, my 15 year old daughter was having trouble sleeping recently because one of her teachers had convinced her that global warming was going to make the planet uninhabitable in my daughter’s lifetime. I’d rather have some modicum of control over how a topic is taught, rather than have my children subject to the unfettered opinions of random teachers. Luckily, my daughter still believes her mother is not a total moron so when I explained that the topic is still a matter of scientific debate and that it’s entirely possible that the climate will reset itself (for lack of a better term) she calmed down.

The banning of DDT was and is one of the great crimes perpetrated on humankind by the enviornmental scientists.

Speaking of indoctrinating kids, that was one they pulled over on me when I was in elementary school. No matter what they misteach the truth will set you free.

I just had an idea – maybe Canada would trade us California for the good part of their country (everything except Ontario and Quebec).

Btw, this here, Dear god, the arrogance of the uniformed! Ever since the canard of “trickle-down economics” conservatives have twisted economics into a pretzel.

…is funny. Just check out the state of MI if you want to see an economic pretzel. Who runs that state? Maybe Hack Jack can jump in here.

Then try to get an apartment or house in areas of Democrat control. Good luck! You won’t be able to unless you’re very rich.

Liberals “protect the little guy” by making it impossible for him to live where liberals rule. “Twisted economics into a pretzel” indeed. The liberal Democrats continually try to make failed economics work. They never notice that their socialist and communist ideas fail every time they are tried.

    Whistler,

In the Octagon, the Ring, or the arena of geo-political conflicts, it is as important to know your enemy’s strengths as his weaknesses.

If I was a devout socialist, convinced of the integrity of my faith and the inevitability of its ultimate conquest of a selfish, sinful world, I too would use the strengths of my capitalist, self-sufficient individualist enemy against him. You would too.

I’ve monitored the kids’ schoolbooks and test, particularly in history and other “social science” studies, since grade school. The youngest one are now in college, delighted to be running rhetorical circles around their less-prepared, liberally inclined classmates and instructors.

Why to conservatives fear and hate science so much?

Just one, and there are so many examples of the lefts’ distorted view of science can be found in Rachel Carsons’ Silent Spring.

One of the more costly, in terms of human life, it illustrates how the left operates in the realm of fear of the unknown.

The banning of DDT was and is one of the great crimes perpetrated on humankind by the enviormental scientists.

  • robert108

Global warming is an hypothesis, and as yet unproven. It’s not science yet, and may never be. This is an end run around the scientific method.

  • http://SayAnythingBlog.com The_Whistler_ofnd

I was going to blog on this. My take on it was who do they think they’re fooling? The kids are already being indoctrinated in the church of liberalism.

In fact just yesterday I had to talk to my son about the reality of global warming and the environment.

  • laydownSally

    Bat,

A perfect example of why “Jack” makes “Mike” all the more bearable despite similarities in ideology.

The former writes and never thinks, the latter thinks, then writes.

To repeat what I have said before:

Everybody remembers Eisenhower’s warning about the, “military-industrial complex,” shoot, it has become the siren call of some.

Few if any recall — and it is never repeated — the second of the two specific warning he made in that very same speech
    http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/dwightdeisenhowerfarewell.html:

“The prospect of domination of the nation’s scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present — and is gravely to be regarded.

Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite.” (emphasis added)

The scientific-technological elite, Eisenhower truly was prescient. Read the speech, it could have been written today.

Complete twaddle. It’s conservatives who use junk science to shout down anyone who doesn’t live inside your reality-proof bubble. This is a perfect example of what I mean.

After all, look at the abysmal miasma you guys have made of the science of economics…

Dear god, the arrogance of the uniformed! Ever since the canard of “trickle-down economics” conservatives have twisted economics into a pretzel.

    Don’t give a rat’s ass.

Recently my 10 year old nephew had a similar reaction and I was reminded of a friend of mine who became a drug addict years ago and is now in recovery.

While he takes full responsibility for his actions he is able to pinpoint the time in his life when he decided to give up.

It was in high school (1983/1984) when his school ran the program, “The Day After.” It was followed by weeks of discussion about how Reagan and the evil War Monger Republicans were going to destroy the world and there was no hope.

He recalls sitting around with his friends deciding there really was no hope — they weren’t doing drugs yet, but by the end of that school year they all were. His mother remembers his despondency and hopeless attitude during that New Years holiday and his downturn from there — it was sad to watch.

Recently there was a psychologist on a news program who reported this same pattern in kids today because of the hysteria of Global warming, and your daughter demonstrates that this happens in real life every day.

The only reason we would do this to our kids is indoctrination, and indoctrination removes freedom from your core.

    Jack,

Well, as expected you’ve managed to avoid any sort of specific answers to the points I raised.

Look, resorting to one word pejoratives (“twaddle”) or leftwing catch phrases (“trickle-down economics”) might garner you points at DU or DailyKos, but both are poor substitutes for reasoned debate or actual examples to support your spurious contentions… political or economic.

As for arrogance, yours is the far greater transgression since apparently you just ain’t got much with which to back it up. Perhaps a couple weeks in the minors to work on your swing?

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/ likwidshoe

Jack – Why to conservatives fear and hate science so much?

Who knew that the conservatives ran the Department of Education?

Have you checked out American test scores lately, Jack? Maybe if you have, you’d question why the liberals fear and hate science so much. They’re certainly not teaching it very well!

After all, most of you want to replace the entire science curriculum with the book of genesis!

Do you do anything else other than talk shit? Just asking.

For someone who is bemoaning science teaching in the schools, you sure don’t sound very scholarly. Perhaps it is you, Jack, who fears and hates science and these infantile statements of yours show nothing more than classic projection.

    You’re a dishonest hack, Jack.

  • Bat One

    Sally,

Regarding Jack and Mike, that was extremely well-said. What passes for thought from the former would be an embarrassment to the latter… and rightly so.

Stepping Up the Pace.” Newsweek. 8 Dec. 1958:

This news article outlines the National Defense Education Act, a bill that gave a billion dollars to mathematics and the sciences in schools. Sputnik’s launch made many realize that reforms were needed in these areas, which is why the National Defense Education Act was passed.
