On Twitter my conservative friends are ecstatic about legendary actor Clint Eastwood’s address to the Republican National Convention.  My email inbox is filling up with messages expressing enthusiasm about it from you readers.  And let me say this: I like Clint Eastwood.  I always have.  I’ve watched all his old movies, and the “Man With No Name” movies are some of my favorite. I mean, we’re talking about Dirty Harry  here.  A man who has stayed relevant as an actor (Million Dollary Baby? Gran Turino?) at an age when even some of the most legendary of Hollywood stars are long out of the spotlight.

And yet, I wasn’t impressed at all with his speech tonight.  I saw an eighty year old man giving a stumbling address to an empty chair.

I understand what convention organizers were trying to do.  Eastwood is an icon, and they wanted to add some star power to the prime time hours of their event.  What they got, though, was an awkward distraction.
