Civil Disobedience in Chicago

Is this the place to draw the line:

CHICAGO - Five months after the city ordered restaurants to stop selling foie gras, it’s liver and let liver in Chicago.

While some fancy restaurants and gourmet shops no longer offer the goose or duck liver delicacy, others are flouting the ban, listing foie gras on their menus and, in one case, framing the city’s warning letter.

Evoking Chicago’s Prohibition-era past, when a password could gain entry into a speakeasy, at least one restaurant is rumored to be serving foie gras to customers who ask for the “special lobster” dish.

And one place has cleverly skirted the ban by offering foie gras as a complimentary item. (The city ordinance bans the SALE of foie gras.)

The city has sent out but a smattering of warning letters, conducted one inspection and has yet to levy its first fine, making it clear that is has little stomach for sniffing out violators of the nation’s first ban on foie gras.

“We need to focus as much as possible on things that actually make people sick and kill people,” said Health Department spokesman Tim Hadac. “Our mission is to protect human health and not the health of geese and ducks.”

Hadac called the ban the department’s lowest priority.

Mayor Richard Daley was quoted in the article as saying that this is the silliest measure the city council has ever passed.  I’ve not spent much time in Chicago.  The last time I went through their airport I was taken aback by all of the “Welcome to Chicago, Mayor Richard Daley” signs.  Is that guy an egomaniac or what.

Anyway back to the story.  It’s my opinion that stupid laws engender disrespect for good laws and law enforcement.  What they should do is engender disrespect and a new career for the politicians that advocate for said stupid laws.

This will go down in history as the Great Chicago Goose Liver Rebellion. Tyrants (and geese) beware!

Whistler,

Actually, those signs are left over from the imperial reign of the current mayor’s father.

You’re joshing me.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

Jonah Goldberg quotes Alexis de Tocqueville regarding such bans:

“It must not be forgotten that it is especially dangerous to enslave men in the minor details of life.”

A troll is someone who only wants to stir up trouble, not have an honest debate.  Some signs that a poster is a troll:
* Dodges questions from other posters * Refuses to give sources
* When one of its arguments is shown to be false, either ignores the proof or moves the goalposts.  Heh. (From the LGF faq)

That toke-vil guy was always stealing my best stuff.  What really makes me mad about it is that he did it by going back in time and publishing it 200 years ago.

Actually, the whole state of Illinois likes to assauge the egos of mayors and governors. Drive through sometime and you’ll be able to spell “Blagojevich” (the gov’nor) quicker than you want to admit.  They had stuff up for Michael Blandic, Jane Byrne, and Harold Washington too, much to their eternal shame.

(I grew up in NW Indiana)

I’ve never really gotten the appeal of goose liver, but if Chicago banned it, maybe I’ll have to try some.  :^)

In North Dakota we use our state signs for a more serious purpose.

I hope there aren’t any gophers out there.

Is this a misdemeanor?  What is the penalty (fine)?  This is clearly a silly and stupid ordinance (law)....  reminds me of those laws forbidding people from hitching your horse while chewing tobacco or something like that.

Heh, I hated foie gras and my stepfather got sick from eating it...I wonder what the rate of sickness is among the people after they eat foie gras. Is it really that bad? Somehow, I still kind of doubt it. This is a bit ridiculous. If you get sick once, just don’t try it again.
